A Career Rooted in Mexican Music
José Antonio “Pepe” Aguilar Jiménez was born on Aug. 7, 1968, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the son of legendary Mexican performers Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre.
Aguilar was raised in Zacatecas, Mexico, and made his musical debut at age three. He joined his father onstage at Madison Square Garden, beginning a public life tied closely to music and performance.
As a teenager, Aguilar explored rock music and led a band called Equs. He later returned to regional Mexican music, where he built one of the most successful careers in the genre.
From Breakthrough Hits to Global Recognition
Aguilar launched his solo career in 1989 with Pepe Aguilar con Tambora. In 1992, he released Recuérdame Bonito, produced by Joan Sebastian.
His 1998 hit Por Mujeres Como Tú helped make him a major star across Latin America. A year later, Por el Amor de Siempre strengthened his reputation with covers of 1970s classics.
Over his career, Aguilar has released more than 30 solo albums. His honors include 19 Premio Lo Nuestro awards and multiple Grammy wins for albums including Por Una Mujer Bonita, Historias de Mi Tierra and 100% Mexicano.
In 2025, Aguilar launched Mi Suerte Es Ser Mexicano, continuing his tribute to Mexican tradition and charrería.
