Meteor Causes Loud Boom Across New England

Residents across parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire reported hearing a loud boom Saturday afternoon, which officials say was caused by a meteor exploding in the atmosphere.

Fireball Detected

NASA said the meteor, or “fireball,” was detected around 2:06 p.m. traveling about 75,000 mph. It broke apart roughly 40 miles above northeastern Massachusetts and southeastern New Hampshire.

Powerful Explosion

NASA estimated the breakup released energy equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT, creating the loud boom heard across the region. Officials said the object was a natural meteor, not space debris or a re-entering satellite.

No Threat Reported

The United States Geological Survey said the event was likely a bolide, a meteor that explodes in the atmosphere. Authorities reported no injuries, damage, or public safety threats linked to the incident.
