Rare Two-Toned Lobster Saved Off Cape Cod

A striking two-colored lobster caught off Cape Cod is drawing attention after being spared from becoming dinner and donated for public display.

A One-of-a-Kind Catch

Fishermen discovered the unusual lobster on April 16, featuring a dramatic split in color—one side a typical brown, the other a vivid orange. The rare pattern extends from head to tail, making it an exceptionally uncommon find.

The lobster was donated by the Wellfleet Shellfish Company to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, where it will eventually be showcased to visitors.

Why It’s So Rare

While lobsters can appear in unusual shades like blue or calico due to genetic mutations, a perfectly split two-color lobster is far rarer. Scientists say this phenomenon may occur when two fertilized eggs fuse and develop into a single animal.

On Display Soon

For now, the lobster is being cared for at a nearby marine facility while the aquarium undergoes renovations. Once reopened, the crustacean will be exhibited as a natural curiosity.

The discovery has sparked fascination across New England, with the seafood company calling it a “remarkable and exciting find.”
