What to Know About Salmonella

Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections each year in the U.S., usually from contaminated food. Symptoms may include fever, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and headache, typically appearing six hours to six days after infection.

Who Is at Higher Risk

Most people recover within a week without treatment, but children under 5, adults over 65, and those with weakened immune systems may suffer more severe illness requiring medical care.
