Authorities continue investigating the Aug. 27 shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis, where 23-year-old Robin Westman killed two children and wounded 18 others before taking his own life.

Scene and Weapons

Investigators found over 100 bullet casings, an AR-15-style rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a 9mm pistol, and extra ammunition. Westman was discovered dead at the back of the church in tactical gear, with smoke canisters and magazine pouches.

Victims and Heroes

Eight-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski were killed. Fifteen children and three elderly parishioners were among the injured. Mayor Jacob Frey praised students and staff who shielded classmates and helped others escape, calling them heroes.

Ongoing Investigation

Search warrants show police are examining Westman’s online activity, electronics, and writings for signs of motive, ideology, or planning. Investigators also searched residences linked to him.

Father’s Tribute

Jesse Merkel, father of Fletcher, remembered his son as a boy who loved sports, fishing, and cooking. He urged parents to “give their children an extra hug and kiss,” calling the shooter a coward.

Security Measures

Minneapolis police have increased patrols at schools and churches through Sept. 5. Survivors and neighbors are being offered financial assistance for recovery. Police leaders said the tragedy has tested the city but also highlighted its resilience.
