Latest News from Crime Stoppers of Houston

On Thursday, May 18, Governor Greg Abbott signed SB 1004 into law. The bill which will make it a crime to remove, destroy, or tamper with an ankle monitor, goes into effect September 1, 2023. Back in 2018, Crime Stoppers of Houston was the first to bring public attention to the issue of offenders removing their ankle monitors after a parolee cut off his monitor and went on a killing spree in Harris County. Sex offenders were also discovered to have removed their ankle monitors and disappeared into thin air. In 2019, Crime Stoppers was the only entity to testify in support of the bill (failed to pass).

In 2023, we once again testified, along with law enforcement agencies, in support of this bill and are so proud to see that it’s been signed into law. Click below for more information on legislative efforts and to watch the breaking news story.

We are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of all the students who participated in the 2022-2023 PSA Contest. This year’s campaign focused on #SeeSomethingSaySomething to educate the public about the seriousness of threats to life and raise awareness of the unfortunate reality faced by students and school staff on a daily basis on campuses.
