A Tesla crash in Katy killed a woman Friday night after the vehicle left the roadway and slammed into a home, according to Harris County investigators. Authorities said the driver told deputies that an automated driving-assistance system was engaged before the crash.

The crash happened June 19 in the 21300 block of Rose Hollow Lane, near Park Brush Lane and Blooming Park Lane. Investigators said the Tesla Model 3 entered the brick home at a high rate of speed.

Tesla Crash in Katy Under Investigation

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said Michael Butler was driving eastbound on Rose Hollow Lane around 8 p.m. when the car failed to stay in a single lane. The vehicle left the roadway and struck the residence.

Officials said the Tesla went through the front of the home and hit a woman who was inside. Local reports identified the woman as Martha Avila. She was taken by helicopter to Memorial Hermann, where she later died from her injuries.

Butler was also injured and taken to a hospital by ambulance. Investigators said he showed no signs of intoxication and cooperated with law enforcement.

No charges had been announced as of the latest public updates.

Driver Told Deputies Automated System Was Engaged

Deputies said Butler told investigators that the Tesla was operating with an automated driving-assistance system engaged. Authorities have not confirmed what role, if any, the system played in the crash.

Sgt. A. Turman with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office told ABC13 that investigators are still reviewing what caused the vehicle to fail to control its speed before impact. He said officials are speaking with people familiar with Tesla vehicles, as well as the driver.

Tesla states in its own driver-assistance guidance that its systems do not make vehicles fully autonomous. The company says drivers must stay alert and remain ready to take control.

Investigators have not said whether speed, driver error, vehicle technology, or another factor caused the crash.

Neighbors Describe Frightening Moments

Neighbors told local outlets that the Tesla appeared to be moving fast through the residential area before it hit the house. One witness told KPRC 2 that people were gathered outside for a child’s birthday party when they saw the vehicle rush down the street.

Another neighbor told ABC13 the crash happened quickly and left children and adults frightened. Video obtained by the station reportedly showed the car speeding along the street shortly before impact.

The crash caused major damage to the home. KPRC 2 reported that the family has been displaced while dealing with the loss and the damage.

Safety Questions Continue After Fatal Crash

The fatal crash adds to ongoing public concern about driver-assistance technology and how motorists use it on local roads. These systems can help with steering, speed, and following distance, but they still require human supervision.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the crash. Officials are expected to review evidence from the scene, vehicle data, witness statements, and any available video.

For Katy-area residents, the case is also a painful reminder that serious crashes can reach beyond the roadway. A family is grieving, a home was destroyed, and investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened.
