Access to affordable healthcare and essential support services remains a challenge for many families across Houston. For more than two decades, Shifa Healthcare & Community Services, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, has been working to bridge that gap by providing medical, dental, and social services to underserved, and uninsured individuals throughout the region.
Led by President and CEO Angie Shaikh, Shifa’s mission is centered on uplifting people from all walks of life through compassionate care, education, and community support. The organization continues to make a lasting impact by addressing critical healthcare needs while offering resources that empower individuals and families to thrive.
Beyond healthcare services, Shifa operates a dedicated Women’s Center, providing emergency housing, meals, counseling, and support services for women and children who are survivors of domestic violence. Through these comprehensive programs, the organization strives to create a safer, healthier, and more vibrant community for all.
Expanding Access to Care in Gulfton area
One of Shifa’s most significant recent milestones was the grand opening of its new medical clinic at 5414 Elm Street in Houston’s Gulfton community. The clinic was established to expand access to quality healthcare for residents who often face barriers to receiving medical services.
The grand opening brought together community leaders, supporters, partners, and residents to celebrate the milestone. Guests participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony and toured the facility, which represents a critical investment in community health.
“We were honored to welcome community members, partners, supporters, and friends who joined us for this special occasion,” Shifa leadership shared. “The opening of the clinic marks an expansion of access to quality healthcare for residents who may face barriers to receiving care.”
The organization also received a Certificate of Recognition from Harris County Precinct 4 Commissioner Leslie Briones, acknowledging the clinic’s opening and its positive impact on the community.
Excellence in Service
Shifa’s commitment to quality care continues to earn national recognition. The National Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (NAFC) recently awarded the organization its Gold Seal for 2026, recognizing excellence in clinic operations and patient care.
For the healthcare professionals serving at Shifa, the work goes beyond medicine.
“It is truly a privilege to work surrounded by people that share the goal of improving the lives of others,” said Daniela Arzani, Nurse Practitioner and Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.
Education Beyond the Clinic
Shifa’s impact extends far beyond its clinic walls. The organization recently launched “Shifa on Call,” a weekly one-hour radio program on 103.3 FM, sponsored by Reyhan Siddiqi and Dr. Yasmeen Qureshi. The program is designed to educate listeners about health topics, preventive care, and community resources.
In addition, Shifa conducts community education sessions focused on domestic violence awareness and prevention, as well as overall health education initiatives to help residents make informed decisions about their well-being.

In a recent newsletter, President and CEO Angie Shaikh reflected on the organization’s growth and community impact:
“June has been a busy month for us. We had the grand opening of our Medical Clinic on Elm Street, and we launched our educational series program both on radio and community centers.”
