Lando Norris took pole position in Hungarian F1 GP qualifying, giving McLaren the top spot for Sunday’s race at the Hungaroring. Norris posted a 1:17.207 lap to beat Lewis Hamilton by 0.012 seconds in a dramatic session.
The final grid changed after qualifying. Hamilton received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri, dropping him from second to fifth. Kimi Antonelli also received a three-place penalty for failing to slow under yellow flags.
Hungarian F1 GP Qualifying Ends With Norris on Pole
Norris delivered his best lap at the right time. His final Q3 run moved him ahead of Hamilton and secured pole at one of Formula 1’s most technical circuits.
Hamilton originally qualified second with a 1:17.219. However, stewards later penalized him for blocking Piastri during Q3.
The penalty promoted Charles Leclerc to second for Ferrari. Piastri moved up to third for McLaren, while Max Verstappen moved to fourth for Red Bull.
Hamilton is now listed fifth on the provisional starting grid. George Russell will start sixth for Mercedes, while Antonelli drops to seventh.
Penalties Change the Front of the Grid
The biggest change came from Hamilton’s penalty. Formula 1 confirmed that stewards reviewed video, telemetry, team radio and in-car footage before issuing the grid drop.
The incident involved Piastri, who was on a flying lap when he encountered Hamilton. The ruling turned what looked like a Ferrari front-row start into a second-row start for Hamilton.
Antonelli’s penalty also shifted the order. He had qualified fourth, but his three-place drop moved him behind Russell.
The revised top five now places Norris first, Leclerc second, Piastri third, Verstappen fourth and Hamilton fifth. That creates a tight mix of McLaren, Ferrari and Red Bull near the front.
McLaren Gets Strong Race Position
McLaren still leaves qualifying with a strong result. Norris starts first, and Piastri starts third after Hamilton’s penalty.
That gives McLaren two cars in the top three. It also gives the team more strategy options during a race where overtaking can be difficult.
The Hungaroring rewards clean laps, tire control and track position. Starting near the front often matters more there than at faster circuits.
Norris will need a strong launch to protect the lead into Turn 1. If he holds first place, McLaren can manage the race from clean air.
Piastri also has a clear chance to fight for a podium. His starting position improved after the penalty decision, but the opening lap will still be critical.
Ferrari and Red Bull Stay in the Fight
Ferrari remains close to the front with Leclerc starting second and Hamilton fifth. Leclerc will line up beside Norris and could challenge into the first corner.
Hamilton faces a harder race after the penalty. Still, fifth place keeps him close enough to fight if Ferrari has strong race pace.
Verstappen starts fourth after the grid reshuffle. That puts Red Bull within striking distance of the podium.
Strategy could decide the race. A well-timed pit stop, traffic, tire wear or a safety car could change the order quickly.
