Houston City College has received a $103,000 investment from NRG Energy, Inc. The funding will expand Houston City College energy apprenticeships for students pursuing careers in the growing Texas energy sector.
The investment, announced Aug. 17, will support apprenticeship pathways in instrumentation and controls. Students will gain technical knowledge and hands-on experience aligned with current workforce needs.
Energy apprenticeships connect education and industry
Houston City College, also known as HCC, develops its workforce programs with input from employers. Its instrumentation and controls training combines classroom lessons with practical experience.
The programs prepare graduates to operate, maintain and troubleshoot automated systems. Those systems play an important role in power generation and other industrial operations.
“Industry is no longer simply advising higher education; it is helping shape it,” said HCC Chancellor Margaret Ford Fisher, Ed.D.
Ford Fisher said partnerships with companies such as NRG help prepare students for careers that are already in demand. They also support the workforce that Texas will need in the future.
NRG investment supports Houston workers
Demand for qualified technical workers continues to grow across the energy industry. NRG leaders said partnerships with educational institutions can help address that need.
“We’re always looking for strong partnerships to help develop the talent needed to meet the challenges facing the energy industry,” said Matthew Pistner, president of NRG Wholesale.
Pistner said the donation will help students develop real-world skills and prepare for rewarding careers. He added that the partnership can help keep quality jobs rooted in Houston.
NRG also expects to continue working with HCC on initiatives that benefit students, employers and the broader community.
Houston City College expands workforce training
The NRG announcement follows other investments designed to strengthen HCC’s workforce pipeline.
Bloomberg Philanthropies previously announced a $17 million investment with the college. That funding will expand apprenticeships, skilled trades training and dual-credit opportunities for high school students.
HCC also received a Lowe’s Foundation Gable Grant to expand local training for high-demand skilled trades.
According to Ford Fisher, these partnerships allow HCC to develop workforce solutions directly with industry leaders. The approach helps ensure students learn the skills employers need.
It also gives businesses access to a growing pipeline of trained workers. That connection can help reduce skills gaps while creating more career opportunities for Houston-area residents.
Preparing students for Texas energy careers
Houston City College serves more than 100,000 students annually. It operates 20 campuses across the Houston region with advanced technology and specialized laboratories.
The college works with employers and industry partners to keep its workforce education aligned with changing market demands. Apprenticeships remain a central part of that strategy because they connect technical instruction with workplace experience.
For Houston students, the NRG investment creates another pathway into a major regional industry. For employers, it supports the development of workers who can help maintain and modernize Texas energy operations.
The partnership reflects a broader effort to connect education, workforce development and economic opportunity throughout the City of Houston. Students interested in energy careers can contact Houston City College for information about available programs and apprenticeship requirements.
