The new HBO Harry Potter trailer offers an extended look at the upcoming television adaptation. Released Sept. 2, the footage introduces a redesigned Hogwarts, a new cast and several memorable scenes from the first book.

The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, will debut during Christmas 2026. It will air on HBO and stream on HBO Max where the service is available.

HBO Harry Potter Trailer Returns to Hogwarts

The new teaser begins with Professor Minerva McGonagall explaining the Sorting Ceremony to Hogwarts’ first-year students. Harry asks the Sorting Hat to keep him out of Slytherin before joining Gryffindor.

The footage then introduces Harry’s closest friends, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry, while Alastair Stout portrays Ron and Arabella Stanton plays Hermione.

Several Hogwarts locations appear throughout the trailer. They include the Great Hall, Gryffindor common room, classrooms and the school’s greenhouse. The series also introduces new designs for the Hogwarts crest and house emblems.

The costumes maintain the traditional black robes associated with the books. However, colored ties and other details help identify each student’s house.

Familiar Characters Make Their Debut

The teaser gives the adult cast more screen time than the show’s first preview. Janet McTeer appears as McGonagall, and John Lithgow plays Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

Nick Frost takes on the role of Rubeus Hagrid. Meanwhile, Paapa Essiedu portrays Potions professor Severus Snape. One scene shows Snape criticizing Harry during a classroom lesson.

Other featured characters include Molly Weasley, Draco Malfoy, Garrick Ollivander and the Dursley family. Harry’s owl, Hedwig, also makes an appearance.

The cast includes Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley and Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy. Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby play Petunia and Vernon Dursley. Anton Lesser portrays Ollivander.

Trailer Highlights Book Moments

The new footage follows Harry’s journey from Privet Drive to the wizarding world. It shows his difficult childhood, his Hogwarts letter and his first experiences with magic.

The trailer also features Quidditch, Wizard’s Chess and a troll inside Hogwarts. Harry receives his wand and later uses the Invisibility Cloak. A brief image appears to tease the Philosopher’s Stone itself.

Several moments come directly from details that received limited attention in the original films. The footage includes Harry at his Muggle school and Aunt Petunia cutting his hair. It also shows Harry and Hagrid traveling on the London Underground.

Those additions reflect HBO’s plan to create a more detailed adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven novels. The official Wizarding World website says the show will include moments never previously shown on screen.

What to Know About the HBO Series

The first season will contain eight episodes, according to The Guardian. Succession writer Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner, while Mark Mylod directs multiple episodes.

HBO has described the project as a long-form adaptation that will explore each book in greater depth. J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer alongside Gardiner, Mylod, David Heyman, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts.

Hans Zimmer and Bleeding Fingers Music will create the series’ score. However, the official Harry Potter website notes that the new music does not appear in this teaser.

The HBO Harry Potter trailer gives longtime fans and younger audiences their clearest look yet at the new adaptation. More footage and an exact premiere schedule may arrive before the show’s Christmas debut.
