OpenAI has expanded its desktop assistant with direct access to Apple’s Messages app. The new ChatGPT Apple Messages integration can read conversations, search message history and prepare responses on supported Mac computers.
The feature also allows ChatGPT to send messages after receiving user approval. It works with iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations available through Apple Messages.
ChatGPT Apple Messages Integration Works Through a Plugin
The new capability uses an Apple Messages plugin inside the ChatGPT desktop application. It is available for ChatGPT Work and Codex on Macs with Apple silicon.
Users can ask ChatGPT to locate information from previous conversations. The assistant can also draft a response based on the messages and instructions provided.
ChatGPT can then prepare or send the reply through Apple Messages. By default, the application asks the user to approve both the message and its recipients before sending anything.
That confirmation step gives users an opportunity to review the wording and verify the intended contacts. It also reduces the risk of ChatGPT sending an incomplete response or addressing the wrong person.
Feature Supports iMessage, SMS and RCS
Apple Messages combines several messaging technologies in one application. Conversations between Apple devices usually use iMessage.
Messages involving other devices may use SMS or RCS, depending on the recipient and available service. The ChatGPT plugin can work across those conversation types.
The integration may help users manage long threads or locate older details without manually scrolling through messages. It could also make drafting routine responses faster.
However, ChatGPT does not replace the Messages app. The plugin uses Apple Messages to access conversations and complete approved actions.
The feature currently requires an Apple silicon Mac. That includes supported computers using Apple’s M-series processors.
Access Is Limited to Managed Workspaces
OpenAI announced the Apple Messages plugin as an Enterprise and Education workspace feature. It is not currently presented as a general feature for every personal ChatGPT account.
Eligible users must use the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS. Availability can also depend on the organization’s settings and permissions.
Workspace administrators can disable the Apple Messages integration through existing Computer Use controls. That option gives organizations authority over whether employees or students can connect ChatGPT to local conversations.
Companies and schools may choose to limit access because message histories can contain personal, confidential or regulated information.
Privacy and Approval Controls Remain Important
Reading Apple Messages gives ChatGPT access to potentially sensitive communication. Conversations may include addresses, financial information, work discussions or family details.
Users should consider the contents of a thread before asking ChatGPT to review it. Organizations should also apply their existing privacy, retention and information-handling policies.
The default approval process provides an important safeguard for outgoing messages. Users can review the text and recipient list before authorizing the action.
ChatGPT-generated replies may still contain errors or misinterpret the tone of a conversation. Important messages should receive a careful review before they are sent.
Desktop Assistants Gain More Control
The Apple Messages plugin represents another step toward turning ChatGPT into a desktop assistant that can complete tasks across applications.
Instead of switching between ChatGPT and Messages, eligible users can search conversations and prepare responses from a single workflow. The ability to send replies also moves the feature beyond basic message summaries.
The integration remains subject to hardware, account and workspace requirements. Mac users should verify their eligibility and update the ChatGPT desktop app before attempting to install the plugin.
