Hawk Fire in Reno Forces Mass Evacuations as Flames Threaten Neighborhoods

0

The Hawk Fire in Reno has forced tens of thousands of residents to leave or prepare to evacuate. The fast-moving wildfire has destroyed homes, injured six people and disrupted travel across northern Nevada.

The human-caused fire started Saturday, Aug. 22, near Hawk Meadow Trail. The ignition point was about one mile north of Cold Creek Trail in northwest Reno.

Hawk Fire in Reno Spreads Through Dry Terrain

The fire spread rapidly across Peavine Peak and parts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Grass, brush and rugged terrain have complicated firefighting efforts.

An official Sunday update listed the fire at 10,522 acres with no containment. However, later reporting placed the burned area at more than 23 square miles, or roughly 14,700 acres. Updated aerial mapping was still pending.

Approximately 400 firefighters and support personnel were assigned to the incident Sunday. The response included 10 aircraft and resources from local, state, federal and international agencies.

Crews used bulldozers to create firebreaks along the southern and eastern edges. Their goal was to keep the flames south of Cold Springs and north of Somersett.

Afternoon winds produced gusts near 20 mph. Officials said the winds could increase fire activity and push flames through pockets of dry vegetation.

Thousands Ordered to Leave Their Homes

About 42,000 residents were placed under “GO NOW” evacuation orders Sunday. Another 45,000 people entered “GET SET” warning zones, according to reports.

Evacuation zones expanded toward northwest Reno and the edge of the University of Nevada, Reno. Authorities advised residents to expect a prolonged absence because conditions could change quickly.

At least three civilians and three first responders suffered injuries. Officials also confirmed that homes burned, although a complete damage count was not immediately available.

Investigators classified the fire as human-caused. However, authorities had not announced whether the ignition was accidental or intentional.

Roads, Power and Smoke Affected

U.S. 395 closed in both directions between Parr Boulevard and Red Rock Road on Sunday morning. Numerous streets also closed around Somersett, Stead, Lemmon Valley and Golden Valley.

NV Energy reported that approximately 10,000 customers lost electricity during an emergency de-energization. The utility shut off power in threatened areas to protect residents and emergency crews.

Smoke may affect Reno-area neighborhoods and travel corridors. Children, older adults and people with heart or lung conditions face greater risks from wildfire smoke. Residents can monitor conditions through the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map.

Evacuation Assistance Available

The Reno-Sparks Convention Center opened Hall 4 as an evacuation center. Residents can enter from Kietzke Lane through Door 20F.

Small animals can be taken to Washoe County Regional Animal Services at 2825 Longley Lane. The Ironwood Event Center at 5600 Whiskey Springs Road is accepting large animals.

Residents should monitor the Emergency Washoe website for current evacuation zones, shelters and road closures. Emergency officials ask the public to reserve 911 for immediate threats and use 311 for evacuation information.

The Hawk Fire follows several major August wildfires north of Reno, including the Bug and Stallion fires. With changing winds and dry vegetation continuing to challenge crews, residents should remain prepared and follow official evacuation instructions.

Houston postal carriers charged in alleged $23 million check-theft scheme

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Three Houston postal carriers are among five people federally charged in an alleged check-theft scheme that investigators said generated more than $23 million over nearly six years.

According to the indictment, postal carriers were recruited to steal checks from the mail and then sell them to buyers through an encrypted communications group on Telegram.

Investigators said the scheme was allegedly orchestrated by Tryston Vaughn, who recruited postal carriers to remove checks from the mail stream. The stolen checks were then allegedly advertised and sold through a Telegram group called “Slips and Chips.”

The three postal carriers charged in the case are Catherine Kilpatrick, Drakkor Alexander and Malcolm Joubert, according to court records.

The indictment alleges the stolen checks included some made out for $16,000, $25,000 and $80,000.

The largest check identified in the indictment was allegedly worth $1.5 million and was taken from the mail by Joubert, investigators said.

A fifth defendant, Alyssa Bryant, is accused of selling a stolen check to a buyer on Telegram for $25,000.

Investigators said the stolen checks were then shipped to buyers through FedEx.

The alleged scheme generated more than $23 million over a period of about six years, according to federal prosecutors.

People in Houston who spoke with ABC13 said the allegations were disturbing and made them think twice about the security of their mail.

“I feel like that definitely wasn’t right. That’s a given,” Suraj Bose said.

“It’s unfortunate for sure,” Jay Dinklage said.

Dinklage said the amount of money allegedly involved was staggering.

“$23 million is not just something you find lying around in a city like Houston,” he said. “They were probably pretty good at it.”

Lila Molina said the allegations have also raised concerns about the security of the mail.

“It definitely does. I definitely still have that bit of fear,” Molina said.

The five defendants face federal charges related to the alleged scheme. The charges are allegations, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.

Memorial Villages residents lose more than $250,000 in fraud cases in a week, police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Five Memorial Villages residents were defrauded this week in cases that collectively resulted in more than $250,000 in losses, according to the Memorial Villages Police Department.

Police Chief Ray Schultz said investigators are now facing what could become a months-long effort involving subpoenas across several states.

Two of the local cases may be connected to crimes tied to an organized crime group based in San Diego, a link that the FBI first flagged to local police, Schultz said.

The largest reported loss was $207,000 in what police described as an account takeover. The victim became suspicious when bank statements stopped arriving in the mail; upon reviewing account activity, they discovered an unauthorized withdrawal.

“He asked for the account to be frozen,” Schultz said. “Somehow there was a miscommunication with the bank and the account was not frozen. And once the suspects got into his banking system, they were actually able to access four different accounts and hence $207,000 in losses.”

The other cases involved unauthorized bank withdrawals, fraudulent credit card activity and a jury duty impersonation scheme. In that case, a resident was allegedly convinced they owed a $2,000 bond for failing to appear for jury service.

Schultz said fraud investigations can quickly become complicated because suspects often move money immediately through different accounts. A single case can require dozens of subpoenas in multiple states as investigators try to trace where the money went and identify those responsible.

“These criminals know that when they access this type of information, they have a short time to utilize it,” Schultz said. “They are also selling the important information, personal identifiers, on the dark web.”

Whether a victim is reimbursed can depend on the circumstances, including how the fraud occurred, how quickly it was reported, and whether the victim inadvertently assisted the scammers, according to Schultz.

Police urge residents to regularly monitor bank accounts and credit reports, watch for missing statements or unfamiliar transactions, and immediately notify their bank and law enforcement if they suspect fraud.

While authorities occasionally see isolated fraud cases, Schultz said five cases in a single week are concerning.

Postal worker arrested in League City, charged with mail theft, police say

LEAGUE CITY, Texas (KTRK) — A mailman is behind bars after he allegedly stole the very correspondence he was supposed to deliver.

According to the League City Police Department, 46-year-old Richard Ybanez of Bacliff was taken into custody on Thursday following an investigation into the suspected mail theft.

Investigators with League City and the United States Postal Service Office of Inspector General received a tip about Ybanez about a week ago. Detectives now say he’s been charged with mail theft of 10 to 30 items, adding that his bond was set at $5,000.

Video obtained by Eyewitness News shows the moments the postman was arrested at a League City gas station in front of a USPS vehicle.

13 Investigates found that in Galveston County, at least 13 cases of mail theft by employees were reported from January 2021 to February 2026.

LCPD said that the investigation remains ongoing.

16-year-old was blackmailing Dickinson ISD teacher over improper relationship, investigators say

DICKINSON, Texas (KTRK) — A Dickinson ISD teacher arrested for having an improper relationship with a 16-year-old student was being blackmailed by the victim, according to investigators.

Kristi Hanks, 46, was arrested Wednesday and charged with improper relationship between educator and student.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office said the victim was enrolled in an alternative education program at the Galveston County Juvenile Justice Center where Hanks was teaching at the time.

The sheriff’s office began investigating Aug. 6 after one of the juvenile inmates reported the relationship to jail staff.

Investigators said the victim and Hanks both denied the relationship initially but that the victim later came clean.

Records show Hanks told investigators the victim had gotten in trouble during the previous school year for writing in a book that Hanks had a “big butt.”

The boy told detectives that Hanks later told him she took it as a compliment and that the two exchanged phone numbers.

According to court documents, they soon began taking part in graphic video calls in which they exposed themselves.

The victim said he and Hanks met for sex at a park on two separate occasions but that Hanks “got scared both times and left before the sexual acts were done.”

He said she would frequently rub her clothed genitals against his arm while at school.

Investigators said the victim threatened to expose the relationship if Hanks didn’t buy him a gun and give him $2,000.

They said Hanks complied and later reported the gun stolen.

The victim allegedly bragged about the blackmail to his friends.

The same day the criminal investigation began, investigators say Hanks was texting the victim and offering to send him money.

“I just cleaned out my bank account for you,” one message read.

“I’d rather be dead than them know that I was a pedophile … since you like to throw that in my face,” another read.

Dickinson ISD said Hanks was placed on leave as soon as the allegations surfaced.

Texans Flash Defensive Depth but Lose 22-20 to Raiders in Preseason Comeback

0

The Houston Texans built a 17-point lead before falling 22-20 to the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, Aug. 20. The Texans vs. Raiders preseason game featured an explosive opening drive, an 80-yard interception return and a late Las Vegas comeback.

Houston dropped to 0-2 in the preseason after failing to score during the second half at Reliant Stadium.

C.J. Stroud Leads Strong Opening Drive

Quarterback C.J. Stroud made his first game appearance of the preseason and played one series. He completed four of six passes for 27 yards.

Houston opened with a 10-play, 69-yard touchdown drive. Running back Woody Marks provided 43 yards on five touches during the possession.

Marks completed the drive with an impressive 20-yard touchdown run. He broke several tackle attempts before reaching the end zone.

The second-year running back finished with 39 rushing yards on four carries. His performance strengthened Houston’s depth behind offseason addition David Montgomery.

Wade Woodaz Delivers the Biggest Texans Highlight

Rookie linebacker Wade Woodaz produced the game’s biggest defensive play during Las Vegas’ opening possession.

Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza attempted a pass to running back Mike Washington Jr. Woodaz stepped in front of the throw and returned the interception 80 yards for a touchdown.

The pick-six gave Houston a 14-0 lead. Woodaz, a fourth-round selection from Clemson, also recorded two tackles.

Head coach DeMeco Ryans credited the play to Woodaz remaining disciplined and following his assignment. The linebacker is competing for a roster spot and a backup role behind Azeez Al-Shaair.

Texans Defensive Depth Pressures Mendoza

Houston’s reserve defense consistently pressured Mendoza during the first half. The first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft absorbed five quarterback hits and one sack.

Second-round rookie Kayden McDonald recorded the sack. Veteran defensive end Jadeveon Clowney also pressured and hit Mendoza.

Mendoza completed eight of 15 passes for 86 yards. He finished without a touchdown and posted a 42.6 passer rating.

The Raiders managed only three first-half points and 141 net yards. Houston carried a 20-3 lead into halftime after adding a field goal during the second quarter.

Raiders Take Control After Halftime

The momentum changed during the second half. Las Vegas tightened its defense and prevented Houston from adding to its lead.

Raiders running back Dylan Laube scored on a 4-yard run during the third quarter. Former Texans running back Dare Ogunbowale added a 19-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Houston’s offense struggled against increased pressure. Patrick Johnson and Jahfari Harvey recorded strip-sacks as the Raiders created additional opportunities.

The Texans finished with no points during the final two quarters.

Aidan O’Connell Completes the Comeback

Las Vegas quarterback Aidan O’Connell directed a 96-yard game-winning drive late in the fourth quarter.

O’Connell connected with Brandon Johnson for a 33-yard gain during the possession. He completed the comeback with a quarterback sneak from the 1-yard line.

Houston received one final opportunity to regain the lead. Raiders defensive back Devin Lafayette ended the threat with an interception.

The result showed both sides of Houston’s developing roster. Marks and Woodaz produced encouraging performances, while the second-half execution exposed areas requiring improvement.

The Texans will complete their preseason schedule against the Carolina Panthers on Friday, Aug. 28. That game will provide one final evaluation before teams reduce their rosters.

ChatGPT on Mac Adds Apple Messages Support for iMessage, SMS and RCS

0

OpenAI has expanded its desktop assistant with direct access to Apple’s Messages app. The new ChatGPT Apple Messages integration can read conversations, search message history and prepare responses on supported Mac computers.

The feature also allows ChatGPT to send messages after receiving user approval. It works with iMessage, SMS and RCS conversations available through Apple Messages.

ChatGPT Apple Messages Integration Works Through a Plugin

The new capability uses an Apple Messages plugin inside the ChatGPT desktop application. It is available for ChatGPT Work and Codex on Macs with Apple silicon.

Users can ask ChatGPT to locate information from previous conversations. The assistant can also draft a response based on the messages and instructions provided.

ChatGPT can then prepare or send the reply through Apple Messages. By default, the application asks the user to approve both the message and its recipients before sending anything.

That confirmation step gives users an opportunity to review the wording and verify the intended contacts. It also reduces the risk of ChatGPT sending an incomplete response or addressing the wrong person.

Feature Supports iMessage, SMS and RCS

Apple Messages combines several messaging technologies in one application. Conversations between Apple devices usually use iMessage.

Messages involving other devices may use SMS or RCS, depending on the recipient and available service. The ChatGPT plugin can work across those conversation types.

The integration may help users manage long threads or locate older details without manually scrolling through messages. It could also make drafting routine responses faster.

However, ChatGPT does not replace the Messages app. The plugin uses Apple Messages to access conversations and complete approved actions.

The feature currently requires an Apple silicon Mac. That includes supported computers using Apple’s M-series processors.

Access Is Limited to Managed Workspaces

OpenAI announced the Apple Messages plugin as an Enterprise and Education workspace feature. It is not currently presented as a general feature for every personal ChatGPT account.

Eligible users must use the ChatGPT desktop app on macOS. Availability can also depend on the organization’s settings and permissions.

Workspace administrators can disable the Apple Messages integration through existing Computer Use controls. That option gives organizations authority over whether employees or students can connect ChatGPT to local conversations.

Companies and schools may choose to limit access because message histories can contain personal, confidential or regulated information.

Privacy and Approval Controls Remain Important

Reading Apple Messages gives ChatGPT access to potentially sensitive communication. Conversations may include addresses, financial information, work discussions or family details.

Users should consider the contents of a thread before asking ChatGPT to review it. Organizations should also apply their existing privacy, retention and information-handling policies.

The default approval process provides an important safeguard for outgoing messages. Users can review the text and recipient list before authorizing the action.

ChatGPT-generated replies may still contain errors or misinterpret the tone of a conversation. Important messages should receive a careful review before they are sent.

Desktop Assistants Gain More Control

The Apple Messages plugin represents another step toward turning ChatGPT into a desktop assistant that can complete tasks across applications.

Instead of switching between ChatGPT and Messages, eligible users can search conversations and prepare responses from a single workflow. The ability to send replies also moves the feature beyond basic message summaries.

The integration remains subject to hardware, account and workspace requirements. Mac users should verify their eligibility and update the ChatGPT desktop app before attempting to install the plugin.

Trump Waives Higher Ground Beef Tariffs for 90 Days to Lower Prices

0

President Donald Trump announced a temporary ground beef tariff waiver aimed at reducing grocery costs for American families. The plan allows additional beef imports to enter the United States without triggering higher out-of-quota tariffs.

The measure covers up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef during a 90-day period.

Ground Beef Tariff Waiver Expands Import Quota

The United States uses a tariff-rate quota for certain beef imports. Products entering within the established quota receive a lower tariff rate.

A higher tariff normally applies after imports exceed that limit. Trump’s plan temporarily allows more ground beef into the country without activating the additional charge.

Trump said the agreement would “substantially lower” ground beef prices. He also said he received a commitment that the imported product would sell for 25% below current market prices.

However, the president did not identify the companies involved in the agreement. He also did not name the countries expected to supply the beef.

Additional information about import schedules, participating retailers and price enforcement was not immediately available.

Ground Beef Prices Remain Historically High

The announcement follows years of rising meat prices. Ground beef averaged about $6.88 per pound nationally in July, according to federal price data.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that uncooked ground beef prices remained 9% higher than one year earlier.

The Department of Agriculture expects beef and veal prices to increase 10.7% during 2026. Wholesale prices have also remained unusually high.

Several factors have contributed to the increases. Drought, feed expenses and reduced cattle supplies have placed pressure on ranchers and meat processors.

The country had 28.5 million beef cows as of July 1, according to the Department of Agriculture. That total was 1% lower than the previous year.

The estimated calf crop also fell 2%. Those numbers indicate that rebuilding the country’s beef supply could take several years.

Imports Could Provide Short-Term Price Relief

Increasing imports could give meat processors and retailers access to more ground beef. Greater supply may reduce wholesale costs and provide some relief at grocery stores.

However, lower import costs do not guarantee an immediate reduction for shoppers. Transportation, processing, packaging and distribution expenses also affect retail prices.

Grocery stores would need to pass the savings to consumers. The administration has not explained how it will ensure the promised 25% reduction reaches meat counters.

Imported beef must also move through inspection and distribution networks. Therefore, consumers may not see price changes immediately.

The waiver will remain in place for 90 days. The higher out-of-quota tariff could return when the temporary period ends unless officials extend or replace the policy.

Ranchers Could Face Additional Competition

American cattle organizations have previously expressed concerns about expanding beef imports. Ranchers argue that additional foreign competition can reduce cattle prices without creating meaningful grocery savings.

The administration said the temporary measure will provide time for the domestic cattle herd to grow. Rebuilding the herd requires ranchers to retain more animals for breeding.

That process can further limit the immediate supply of cattle available for beef production.

The tariff waiver represents a short-term response to high food costs. Its effect will depend on import volumes, retailer participation and the amount of savings passed to consumers.

Families can monitor unit prices and weekly grocery advertisements as the imported beef reaches stores.

Meghan Markle Reportedly in Talks for ‘The Gentlemen’ Season 3 Role

Meghan Markle could return to scripted television through Guy Ritchie’s crime series “The Gentlemen.” The reported Meghan Markle “The Gentlemen” role would place the former “Suits” star in a possible third season.

Negotiations are reportedly underway, but no contract has been announced. Details about Markle’s potential character also remain unavailable.

Meghan Markle ‘The Gentlemen’ Role Is Not Confirmed

Netflix has not officially announced Markle’s casting. The streaming company also has not confirmed a third-season renewal for “The Gentlemen.”

Casting discussions can change before production begins. Therefore, Markle’s involvement should remain unconfirmed until the producers issue a formal announcement.

The role would represent Markle’s most prominent return to scripted television since leaving “Suits.” She played paralegal Rachel Zane for seven seasons.

Markle stepped away from the legal drama before marrying Prince Harry in 2018. She later worked on documentaries, podcasts and lifestyle programming.

‘The Gentlemen’ Returns for Season 2

The second season of “The Gentlemen” will premiere Sept. 3, 2026. Guy Ritchie created the series as an extension of his 2019 film of the same name.

The show follows Eddie Horniman, played by Theo James. Eddie unexpectedly inherits his family’s country estate following his father’s death.

He soon discovers an illegal cannabis operation beneath the property. The discovery pulls him into a criminal organization led by the Glass family.

Kaya Scodelario plays Susie Glass, who manages the organization’s business interests. Ray Winstone portrays her father, Bobby Glass.

Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson and Vinnie Jones also appear in the ensemble cast. Additional performers include Giancarlo Esposito, Jasmine Blackborow, Michael Vu and Harry Goodwins.

Season 2 Expands the Criminal Operation

Season 2 begins one year after Eddie and Susie become partners in Bobby’s international criminal organization.

As the business grows, Bobby begins making decisions that appear increasingly unstable. Eddie and Susie must decide whether to challenge him or risk losing control of the operation.

The new episodes will continue the series’ combination of crime, action and dark comedy. The story also explores the connection between Britain’s aristocratic families and the criminal underworld.

Ritchie serves as creator and executive producer. He also directed episodes of the series.

A Potential Return to Acting for Markle

Markle became widely recognized through “Suits,” which introduced her to an international television audience. Her earlier acting credits include roles in “Fringe,” “CSI: Miami” and “Castle.”

A part in “The Gentlemen” would return her to a major scripted production. It could also introduce her to viewers who know her primarily through her public life and media projects.

The nature of the possible role remains unclear. No information has emerged about whether Markle would appear as a recurring character, guest star or member of the main cast.

Production details for a third season also remain unconfirmed. Netflix may wait to evaluate the second season before making a public renewal announcement.

The reported discussions have already generated attention because of Markle’s long absence from television drama. More information could become available after Season 2 arrives in September.
