The College Football Playoff backed conference rules addressing professional athletes returning to college on Friday, Sept. 4. The CFP said consistent standards are necessary to protect competitive integrity across major college football.
The Irving-based organization issued its statement as conferences and schools face legal disputes over athlete eligibility. Those cases include players who entered professional drafts, signed contracts or appeared on professional rosters.
CFP Supports Conference Eligibility Rules
“The CFP strongly supports the positions and rules of individual conferences concerning the return to college of athletes with professional draft, contract or roster ties,” the organization said.
According to the CFP, conference rules help protect the needs and interests of college football. The organization also said clear standards would help Football Bowl Subdivision schools understand their responsibilities.
In addition, the CFP said consistent expectations would strengthen public confidence in the sport’s competitive integrity.
The organization declined further comment because of ongoing legal proceedings.
Conferences Address Professional Athletes Returning to College
The statement follows recent action by several major conferences.
The Big 12 Conference unanimously adopted a rule barring its schools from fielding professional athletes. The policy covers athletes who entered a professional draft without withdrawing on time, appeared on a professional roster or signed a contract.
The Big 12 said its rule operates independently from NCAA eligibility decisions.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic Coast Conference adopted similar restrictions for football and men’s and women’s basketball. Its policy applies to certain athletes with NFL, NBA, G League, WNBA or other professional ties.
The American Conference also established a conference-wide standard. However, its policy does not disqualify athletes who only participated in a professional tryout and received necessary expenses.
The SEC and Big Ten have also moved to prevent athletes with certain professional ties from returning to conference competition.
LSU Case Raises Eligibility Questions
The debate intensified after athletes sought court orders allowing them to compete for LSU. Several argued that NCAA rule changes unfairly excluded athletes who began college in 2022.
A Louisiana judge issued a preliminary injunction preventing the SEC and NCAA from punishing schools that add affected athletes. The SEC then pursued a federal case against LSU and university leaders, according to the Associated Press.
Among the athletes involved are former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Both entered the 2026 NFL Draft and later spent time with NFL organizations.
The athletes maintain that they pursued professional opportunities before a new NCAA rule expanded eligibility for some players. Conference officials argue that roster limits and competitive fairness require a firm distinction between college and professional sports.
The NFL has also said players who leave the league for college cannot return to an NFL roster during the 2026 season. They would instead become free agents in 2027.
CFP Focuses on Competitive Integrity
The CFP’s position does not create a new eligibility rule. Instead, it supports the authority of individual conferences to establish and enforce their own standards.
The dispute could affect recruiting, roster management and player opportunities across college football. Court decisions may ultimately determine how much authority conferences retain over athletes who still have college eligibility after pursuing professional careers.
Until those cases are resolved, schools, athletes and supporters should monitor announcements from their conferences and the NCAA.
