There are few causes that resonate more deeply than protecting children during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. Across Greater Houston, countless children enter the child welfare system each year after experiencing abuse, neglect or other traumatic circumstances. Often, they leave home with little more than the clothes they are wearing.
For nearly three decades, BEAR…BE A Resource has worked to ensure these young people are met not only with basic necessities, but also with compassion, dignity and hope.
As the only nonprofit partner working directly with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services and Harris County Resources for Children and Adults, BEAR provides specialized programs that support at-risk and CPS-involved children and their caregivers. The organization’s mission extends beyond meeting immediate needs. It focuses on helping children feel valued, supported and empowered as they navigate uncertain circumstances.

Over the past 29 years, BEAR has grown from a small organization operating on a $7,000 annual budget into a nonprofit with an operating budget exceeding $2 million. That growth reflects both the increasing need for services and the unwavering commitment of a community determined to make a difference in the lives of children.
One of the factors that sets BEAR apart is its unique public-private partnership model. Through its collaboration with county and state agencies, the organization is able to maximize the impact of donor support, with 88 cents of every dollar raised helping sustain its core programs.
Those programs touch lives throughout the year. Children entering care receive essential items through BEAR rooms. Students are equipped with backpacks and school supplies as they prepare for a new academic year. During the holiday season, Christmas gifts bring moments of joy and normalcy. BEAR also shines a light on children awaiting forever families through the display of adoption advocacy photography across the Houston area.
Recently, supporters gathered at the annual Stetsons & Stilettos gala, one of BEAR’s signature fundraising events, to help ensure these critical programs continue. The evening served as a reminder that when a community unites around a common purpose, meaningful change is possible.
In a time when many children face extraordinary challenges, BEAR remains a steadfast source of hope and help. Its work demonstrates that a caring community can do more than meet immediate needs. It can help shape brighter futures, one child at a time.
BEAR…BE A Resource continues its mission of improving lives by providing hope, help and essential resources for at-risk and CPS-involved children and their caretakers throughout the Greater Houston area.
