Man charged in shooting that injured 2 Precinct 4 deputy constables, Harris County DA’s Office says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The suspect accused of shooting two Precinct 4 deputy constables on Friday has been identified, officials said.

Edgar Villegas is under police guard at a local hospital after authorities said he was injured while being apprehended by a police K9. Officials said Villegas is receiving treatment before he is transferred to the Harris County Jail.

Edgar Villegas Faces Aggravated Assault Charge

According to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, Villegas is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer.

Authorities said the charge stems from a shooting involving two deputies who responded to a shots-fired report in Humble.

The deputies were identified as Deputy Dante Zepda and Deputy George Esparza. Officials said both deputies were shot during the response.

Deputies Responded to Shots-Fired Report

Investigators said the deputies were called to the Humble area after a report of gunfire.

During the response, authorities said Villegas shot Deputy Zepda and Deputy Esparza.

Details about the deputies’ conditions were not included in the initial information released by officials.

Suspect Remains Under Guard at Hospital

Villegas remains hospitalized under police guard while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during his apprehension.
