Peru Earthquake Kills at Least Six in Andes Region

A Peru earthquake killed at least six people and injured more than 30 others after shaking the country’s Andes region Saturday night, authorities said. The 5.5 magnitude quake also displaced about 300 residents, according to officials.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the earthquake struck at 9:24 p.m. Saturday. Its epicenter was near Sicaya, in Huancayo province, about 2 kilometers west-southwest of the city.

Peru Earthquake Hits Near Sicaya

The earthquake struck at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers, or 6.2 miles, according to the USGS. Shallow earthquakes often cause stronger shaking near the surface.

The hardest-hit areas included communities in the Andes region, where older buildings remain vulnerable to strong movement. Local officials reported collapsed homes and serious structural damage.

Authorities said the district of Chongos Bajo was among the most affected areas. Emergency crews were sent there to search for survivors and assess damage.

Officials also said the number of missing people was not immediately clear. Rescue and recovery work continued Sunday as residents waited for more information.

Homes, Churches and Historic Sites Damaged

The quake damaged homes, public buildings and religious sites. Authorities reported damage to the historic “Santiago de León” church and convent in Chongos Bajo.

The church dates back to the 16th century. Its damage added a cultural loss to the human toll of the disaster.

Many homes in the affected communities were built with adobe, a traditional material made from earth and organic fibers. Adobe structures can be especially vulnerable during earthquakes.

That risk is common in many rural and historic areas of Peru. When shaking begins, walls can crack or collapse quickly.

Residents in some communities spent the night outside after the quake. Others searched through rubble for belongings, tools and animals.

Injuries and Displacement Reported

Officials said more than 30 people were injured. About 300 people were displaced from their homes.

Power outages were also reported in some districts. Emergency teams worked to restore services and inspect damaged roads and buildings.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of all victims. Officials continued gathering reports from remote areas, where damage assessments can take time.

The National Civil Defense Institute said emergency teams were working in affected communities. Crews focused on search, rescue and damage evaluation.

The response also included support for residents who could not safely return home. Temporary shelter and basic supplies were among the immediate needs.

Peru Faces Frequent Seismic Risk

Peru sits along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most active earthquake zones. The area includes several countries along the Pacific Ocean where tectonic plates meet.

Because of that location, Peru frequently experiences earthquakes of different sizes. Some cause little damage, while others become deadly.

One of the country’s most destructive recent earthquakes hit near Pisco in 2007. That 7.9 magnitude quake killed hundreds of people and caused widespread damage.

Saturday’s quake was smaller in magnitude. However, its shallow depth and vulnerable construction made it dangerous for affected communities.

The Peru earthquake now leaves families grieving and communities facing a difficult recovery. Officials urged residents in damaged areas to follow safety guidance while crews continue inspections and emergency work.

The Odyssey Leads Weekend Box Office With Massive Opening

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey dominated the weekend box office with one of the biggest openings of the year. The Universal release earned an estimated $124.5 million in North America and $264.1 million worldwide.

The strong debut gave theaters a major summer boost after several weeks of mixed results. It also showed that audiences will still turn out for major event films, especially when premium formats are part of the experience.

Weekend Box Office Belongs to The Odyssey

The Odyssey opened at No. 1 with a commanding lead over every other film in theaters. The movie stars Matt Damon as Odysseus and features a large cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Charlize Theron.

The film adapts Homer’s ancient epic about Odysseus’ long journey home after the Trojan War. Nolan’s version arrived with major audience interest, strong reviews and high demand for IMAX screenings.

Its $124.5 million domestic opening marked Nolan’s biggest launch since The Dark Knight Rises. It also beat the opening weekend of Oppenheimer, his Oscar-winning 2023 hit.

Premium screens played a major role. The Odyssey was filmed entirely with IMAX cameras, which made large-format showings a major selling point.

IMAX Demand Helps Drive Ticket Sales

IMAX theaters were a major part of the weekend box office story. Some locations added late-night and early-morning screenings to meet demand.

That interest helped turn the movie into more than a regular release. For many fans, seeing the film in its intended format became part of the event.

The movie also arrived with an R rating and a runtime of about three hours. Those factors can sometimes limit turnout, but they did not slow this opening weekend.

Instead, audiences responded to Nolan’s name, the cast and the large-scale presentation. The result gave Universal a major win during the busy summer season.

Moana and Family Films Stay in the Top Five

Disney’s live-action Moana placed second with an estimated $19 million. The film dropped from its opening weekend but remained a strong option for families.

Minions & Monsters and Toy Story 5 followed closely, with each earning about $14.8 million. Their continued performance shows that animated and family-friendly films are still drawing steady audiences.

Toy Story 5 has now earned more than $430 million domestically. That makes it one of the summer’s biggest long-running hits.

Evil Dead Burn rounded out the top five with an estimated $5 million. The horror release saw a steep drop but continued to bring genre fans into theaters.

A Strong Weekend for Movie Theaters

The overall domestic box office reached more than $190 million for the weekend. That total gave theaters one of their strongest frames of the summer.

The performance matters because the movie industry has spent years trying to rebuild consistent theatergoing habits. Big openings help, but strong second and third weekends are just as important.

The Odyssey now has a clear runway before the next major blockbuster arrives. If word of mouth stays strong, the film could continue to play well into August.

The weekend box office also shows that audiences are not only chasing sequels and superhero films. A major filmmaker, a recognizable story and a premium theater experience can still create a cultural moment.

For movie fans, the takeaway is clear. The summer box office is not slowing down, and The Odyssey has turned the post-World Cup weekend into a major win for theaters.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — A 19-year-old man is facing murder charges after a shooting that killed an 18-year-old and injured a 20-year-old outside a north Harris County restaurant, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said the shooting happened along the North Freeway near Airtex at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to deputies, two groups of people got into an argument in the parking lot before the suspect went to his car, grabbed a gun, and opened fire.

An 18-year-old died, but a 20-year-old who was injured is expected to live, deputies said. Both victims were relatives, HCSO said.

HCSO later identified Jonathan Mata as the teen who died in the shooting.

According to the sheriff’s office, after the shooter fled the scene in a black Chevy Camaro, a witness who was with Mata followed him while on the phone with 911.

Deputies said the Houston Police Department found the shooter at a location in Houston’s south side and took him into custody.

He was identified as 19-year-old Juan Lopez and was charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, HCSO said, adding that he has been booked in the Harris County Jail.

Soccer After World Cup: What Fans Can Watch Next

The World Cup has ended, but soccer after World Cup season is already moving forward. For newer fans, the next step is simple: keep following the leagues, clubs and players that made the tournament exciting.

The global soccer calendar rarely stops for long. Across the United States, Mexico and Europe, several competitions offer clear entry points for fans who want to keep watching.

Soccer After World Cup Starts Close to Home

Major League Soccer returned from its World Cup pause in mid-July. That gives new fans an easy way to continue watching without waiting months for another major tournament.

For Texas fans, MLS offers local connections through Houston Dynamo FC, Austin FC and FC Dallas. The Dynamo return to Shell Energy Stadium against D.C. United on July 22, followed by a home match against Austin FC on July 25.

MLS can be a strong entry point for new fans. The games are local, the schedule is easy to follow, and many clubs feature players with international experience.

The league also builds toward Decision Day on Nov. 7. That final regular-season matchday helps decide playoff spots and seeding.

Leagues Cup Brings MLS and Liga MX Together

Leagues Cup may be the best next tournament for fans who enjoyed the World Cup’s international feel. The 2026 edition runs from Aug. 4 through Sept. 6.

The tournament brings together 36 clubs from MLS and Liga MX. That mix creates regional rivalries between teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico.

For many Latino fans in Texas, Liga MX clubs already carry family history and community pride. Leagues Cup gives those clubs a direct stage against MLS teams.

New fans can also use the tournament to learn different styles. MLS often plays with speed and transition. Liga MX teams can bring technical quality, rhythm and experience in tight games.

Liga MX Is Already Back

Liga MX Apertura 2026 has also begun, giving fans another immediate option. The season opened July 16 with Necaxa facing Atlante.

Liga MX is one of the most watched leagues among Mexican and Mexican American fans. Clubs such as América, Chivas, Cruz Azul, Tigres, Monterrey and Pumas carry strong followings across Texas.

The Apertura format also moves quickly. Regular-season matches build toward the liguilla, the playoff round that decides the champion.

That structure can feel familiar for American sports fans. It also rewards attention because every late-season result can change the playoff picture.

European Club Soccer Returns Soon

European soccer gives fans another major lane after the World Cup. The Premier League begins its 2026-27 season on Aug. 21.

The UEFA Champions League also continues its early rounds this summer. Its league phase begins Sept. 8-10, bringing together many of the world’s biggest clubs.

For new fans, European soccer can feel crowded at first. A simple approach helps. Pick one league, one club or one player, then follow from there.

The Premier League is often a good starting point because of its global reach. La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 also offer major clubs, star players and strong rivalries.

How New Fans Can Choose a Team

Newer fans do not need to know every rule or every roster right away. A good first step is to follow a team with a local connection, a favorite World Cup player or a style that feels exciting.

Some fans prefer clubs with long histories. Others connect with underdogs, attacking teams or clubs tied to family roots.

Watching highlights can help, but full matches show how the game really works. The movement off the ball, defensive pressure and late-game changes become easier to notice over time.

Soccer after World Cup season does not need to feel like a drop-off. It can become the start of a longer connection to the sport, from local stadiums in Texas to major matches across the world.

Iranian Drone Attack Raises Tensions After U.S. Service Member Killed in Iraq

An Iranian drone attack has intensified concerns across the Middle East after a U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq on July 18. U.S. Central Command said the service member died during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone.

Iranian Drone Attack Kills U.S. Service Member

CENTCOM said a second U.S. service member was wounded during the incident and received treatment for a minor injury. Officials withheld the names of the service members while families were notified.

The death came during a tense period for U.S. forces in the region. American troops have faced repeated threats from drones and missiles tied to Iran and Iran-aligned groups.

The incident also followed deadly attacks in Jordan. According to U.S. military officials, two U.S. service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks. Another service member was reported missing after that attack.

U.S. Responds With New Strikes

The United States launched additional airstrikes against Iranian military targets after the casualties. U.S. officials said the strikes targeted sites connected to missile, drone and military operations.

The response shows how quickly drone warfare can widen an already dangerous conflict. Drones can travel long distances, avoid some defenses and leave behind unexploded material that remains deadly after interception.

Military officials have described the recent attacks as part of a broader pattern of escalation. Iran has also faced U.S. strikes on military infrastructure, while several countries in the region have raised security concerns.

Regional Concerns Continue To Grow

The latest incidents have added pressure across Iraq, Jordan and the Gulf region. U.S. bases and partner nations remain on alert as officials monitor possible additional attacks.

The Strait of Hormuz also remains a major concern. The waterway is one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes. Any disruption there can affect global energy prices and regional stability.

For families with loved ones serving overseas, the latest deaths highlight the human cost of the conflict. They also show how military operations can remain dangerous even after a drone is shot down.

What Happens Next

U.S. officials have not released full details about the downed drone or the controlled detonation in Iraq. They also have not identified the fallen service member.

More information may be released after family notifications and military reviews are complete. Until then, officials are expected to continue assessing threats to U.S. personnel and allied bases.

The Iranian drone attack underscores the growing role of unmanned weapons in modern conflicts. It also raises urgent questions about how the United States, Iran and regional governments can prevent further escalation.

Communities across Texas and the nation will be watching closely as officials release updates and as military families wait for clearer answers.

Travis Scott Incident at New York Club Draws Attention

A Travis Scott incident at a New York private club is drawing new attention after reports of a bottle-throwing altercation involving NBA player Jordan Clarkson. The Houston-born rapper and Clarkson were reportedly at Zero Bond in NoHo during a private event that included a performance by 50 Cent.

The incident reportedly began after Scott believed another guest was recording him. Security stepped in, and no police or paramedics were called, according to reports.

Travis Scott Incident Reportedly Happened at Zero Bond

The reported altercation took place Saturday night at Zero Bond, an exclusive members-only club in New York City. Scott and Clarkson were attending a private event connected to Raising Cane’s, according to entertainment reports.

The event featured a performance by 50 Cent. The performance reportedly continued after security handled the disturbance.

Reports said tensions rose when Scott thought someone at the club was filming him. Bottles were later thrown during the confrontation.

It remains unclear who threw the bottles. Reports have not confirmed whether Scott, Clarkson, members of their groups or others at the event started the bottle-throwing.

Jordan Clarkson Also Reportedly Removed

Clarkson, a former NBA Sixth Man of the Year, was reportedly removed from the club along with Scott after the confrontation. The NBA guard has played for teams including the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers.

Reports did not say that Clarkson was arrested or charged. No injuries were immediately reported.

His presence added another high-profile name to the incident. It also helped push the story across entertainment and sports circles.

Neither Clarkson nor Scott had publicly commented on the reported club confrontation as of Sunday.

Security Responded Quickly

Security reportedly moved in before the situation escalated further. The club did not appear to call police, and no emergency medical response was reported.

That detail suggests the incident stayed inside the venue. It also means there were no immediate public records of arrests, charges or injuries tied to the altercation.

Zero Bond, Scott’s representatives, Clarkson’s representatives and Raising Cane’s had not publicly commented on the reported incident.

Without official statements, the full details remain limited. The incident is still being discussed through entertainment reports and social media posts.

Public Attention Follows Recent Legal Headlines

The New York club report comes shortly after Scott faced another legal headline connected to a past incident. Three yacht crew members recently filed a civil lawsuit over a 2024 encounter in Miami Beach.

That lawsuit alleges assault, battery, false imprisonment and emotional distress. Scott had been arrested after the 2024 yacht incident, but misdemeanor charges from that case were later dismissed.

The lawsuit is a civil case, not a criminal charge. The plaintiffs are seeking damages.

Scott’s team has not publicly addressed the new lawsuit in detail. As with the Zero Bond report, the situation remains tied to allegations that have not been fully tested in court.

What Happens Next

For now, the Travis Scott incident at Zero Bond appears to have ended without arrests or reported injuries. The main questions center on what started the confrontation and who took part in the bottle-throwing.

More details could emerge if the club, event organizers, Scott or Clarkson issue statements. Police records would also clarify whether any complaint was filed later.

Until then, the incident remains a reported nightclub altercation involving two high-profile public figures. For fans and the entertainment industry, it adds another moment of scrutiny around celebrity behavior at private events.

Spain World Cup Win Seals Second Title After Extra-Time Victory Over Argentina

Spain’s World Cup win came after a tense final against Argentina on Sunday, July 19, 2026, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Ferran Torres scored in extra time to give Spain a 1-0 victory and its second men’s FIFA World Cup title.

Spain World Cup Win Comes in Extra Time

The match stayed scoreless through regulation as Spain controlled much of the game. Argentina defended deep and relied on goalkeeper Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez to keep the final level.

Spain finally broke through in the 106th minute. Torres finished the decisive goal after Spain built another attack under pressure. The goal capped a strong tournament run for a team built on possession, discipline and speed.

The victory gave Spain its first men’s World Cup title since 2010. It also placed Spain among the nations with multiple men’s World Cup championships.

Argentina Falls Short of Repeat Title

Argentina entered the final as the defending champion after winning the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Lionel Messi and his teammates were trying to win back-to-back World Cups, a rare achievement in men’s soccer.

Spain limited Argentina’s chances for most of the match. Argentina struggled to create clear looks at goal and spent long stretches trying to absorb Spanish pressure.

The final grew more difficult for Argentina late in the game. Midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off, leaving Argentina with 10 men during a critical stretch. Spain used that advantage to keep control in extra time.

For Messi, the loss may mark the end of his World Cup career. The 39-year-old forward has already played in six World Cups and remains one of the sport’s defining figures.

A Historic Moment for Spanish Soccer

Spain’s championship adds another major chapter to the country’s soccer history. The men’s team won its first World Cup in 2010, when Andrés Iniesta scored against the Netherlands in South Africa.

This 2026 title reflects a new generation. Players such as Ferran Torres, Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams helped push Spain back to the top of world soccer.

Spain also made history beyond the men’s game. The country now holds the men’s World Cup title while its women’s national team remains the reigning Women’s World Cup champion after winning in 2023.

That achievement highlights Spain’s current strength across the sport. It also shows how deeply soccer talent has developed across the country’s national programs.

Final Played in the United States

The 2026 FIFA World Cup was hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada. The final in New Jersey closed the expanded tournament, which featured 48 teams.

MetLife Stadium hosted the championship match in front of a global audience. The event marked one of the biggest soccer moments ever held in the United States.

For fans in Texas and across the Latino community, the final carried extra interest. Spain and Argentina both have large followings across Spanish-speaking communities, making the matchup one of the most watched events of the year.

Spain now leaves the tournament as world champion. Its 1-0 win over Argentina delivered a narrow scoreline, but the result confirmed a larger story: Spain’s latest generation has brought the country back to the top of world soccer.

The Odyssey Box Office Opens Strong With $17.6M in Previews

The Odyssey box office run is off to a powerful start. Christopher Nolan’s epic earned $17.6 million in domestic preview screenings, putting it on track for a projected $117 million opening weekend.

The Odyssey Box Office Starts With Major Preview Numbers

Universal’s The Odyssey began its theatrical journey with one of the strongest preview totals of 2026. The $17.6 million figure gives the film major momentum heading into its first full weekend.

Industry projections now place the film near a $117 million domestic debut. That would make it one of the biggest openings of the year and one of Nolan’s strongest launches.

The result also shows the continued strength of premium formats. IMAX, premium large format screens and 70mm presentations helped drive early demand.

Christopher Nolan Brings Homer’s Epic to Theaters

The Odyssey adapts Homer’s ancient Greek poem about Odysseus and his long journey home after the Trojan War. Nolan wrote and directed the film.

The cast includes Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. Damon stars as Odysseus, with Hathaway playing Penelope.

The film has drawn attention for its scale and theatrical presentation. It was promoted as a major big-screen event, with strong interest in IMAX and 70mm showings.

That strategy appears to be working. Advance ticket sales and sold-out premium screenings helped build early buzz before opening weekend.

Premium Formats Help Drive Demand

Premium screens have become a key part of major box office launches. For The Odyssey, that demand is especially important.

Nolan has long supported theatrical releases and large-format filmmaking. His previous films, including Oppenheimer and The Dark Knight trilogy, also benefited from event-style moviegoing.

The Odyssey follows that pattern. Many moviegoers appear to be choosing larger screens and higher-priced formats for the film’s opening frame.

That gives the movie a stronger revenue base, even before regular weekend crowds are fully counted.

Opening Weekend Could Mark a Nolan Milestone

If The Odyssey reaches its projected $117 million opening, it would pass Oppenheimer’s $82.4 million domestic debut. It would also place the film among Nolan’s biggest box office starts.

The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises remain his top domestic openers. Both films opened above $150 million.

The Odyssey may not reach those superhero-level numbers, but its projected launch is still significant. The film is based on classical literature, not an existing modern franchise.

That makes the early box office response especially notable. It suggests Nolan’s name remains a major draw for audiences.

A Strong Start for Summer Moviegoing

The Odyssey arrives during a competitive summer movie season. Its opening could give theaters another major win during a year of high-profile releases.

A strong debut would also support the industry’s push for premium theatrical experiences. Studios and theater chains continue to rely on films that feel urgent on the big screen.

Final weekend numbers will show how far The Odyssey can sail beyond its preview start. For now, the film’s $17.6 million launch signals strong audience interest and a major opening ahead.

Bethesda Fallout Announcement Confirms Major Updates for Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Starfield

Bethesda Game Studios shared a major update on its future plans, giving fans new details on Fallout, The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield. The Bethesda Fallout announcement confirms several long-awaited projects, though most still do not have release dates.

Bethesda Fallout Announcement Includes Remasters

The biggest news centers on Fallout. Bethesda confirmed that Fallout 5 is in pre-production and remains part of the studio’s long-term plans.

The studio also said remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in development. Bethesda did not announce release windows for either project.

The Fallout: New Vegas news is especially notable because the original game was developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Bethesda also confirmed it is working with Obsidian on a new Fallout project.

That update gives longtime fans a clearer look at the franchise’s future. However, Bethesda kept many details limited. No platforms, dates or story information were announced for the remasters or the new Obsidian project.

Fallout 76 and Fallout Shelter Also Get Updates

Bethesda also outlined plans for Fallout 76. The online game is set to receive a major 2027 expansion called Raven Rock.

The expansion will serve as a prequel story to Fallout 3. That setting connects the live-service game more closely to one of the franchise’s most recognized entries.

Fallout Shelter will also continue with new seasons. Bethesda also referenced Amazon’s unscripted television project tied to the mobile game.

The studio said there will not be a Fallout Day broadcast this year. Instead, Bethesda plans to mark Fallout’s 30th anniversary in 2027 with a live celebration in Washington, D.C.

Elder Scrolls VI Remains Bethesda’s Main Focus

Bethesda also gave an update on The Elder Scrolls VI. The studio said the game is now its primary development focus.

The company said most of its team is working on the next chapter of the fantasy role-playing series. The game still does not have a release date.

Bethesda also said The Elder Scrolls VI and Fallout 5 will use Creation Engine 3. That engine is the studio’s next major technology platform.

ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online, will work more closely with Bethesda on the broader Elder Scrolls franchise. The company said the goal is to create stronger experiences across the series.

Starfield Remains Part of the Roadmap

Bethesda also confirmed that Starfield remains active. The studio said the game’s third year will bring new stories and gameplay improvements.

New Starborn content is planned for 2027. Bethesda did not share a full roadmap, but the update shows the studio has not moved away from its newest original franchise.

The announcement comes during a difficult period for the wider Xbox division. Recent restructuring and layoffs have affected several teams connected to Bethesda and ZeniMax.

Still, Bethesda’s update signals a strong focus on its biggest role-playing franchises. For players, the clearest takeaway is that Fallout, The Elder Scrolls and Starfield will remain central to the studio’s plans for years ahead.

Mexico Earthquake Shakes Guatemala and El Salvador

A powerful Mexico earthquake struck near the country’s southern Pacific coast Friday, shaking communities across Guatemala and El Salvador. Authorities reported no immediate major damage or deaths, though emergency teams continued reviewing conditions in affected areas.

7.3 Mexico Earthquake Hits Near Chiapas

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake at magnitude 7.3. Its epicenter was about 30 miles southwest of Aquiles Serdan, near the coast of Chiapas.

The quake struck at a depth of about 9 miles. It was felt from southern Mexico to Guatemala City and San Salvador, according to early reports.

In Tapachula, near Mexico’s southern border, residents evacuated buildings as the shaking intensified. Officials said evacuations were orderly in several areas.

Mexico’s government activated emergency protocols after the quake. President Claudia Sheinbaum said preliminary reports showed no damage in Chiapas or nearby Tabasco.

Shaking Felt Across Guatemala and El Salvador

In Guatemala City, residents and office workers left buildings as the shaking continued. Some people poured into streets during the morning rush hour.

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo said there were no reported deaths. Civil protection officials also monitored landslides and other possible quake-related hazards.

In El Salvador, shaking was strong enough to prompt evacuations in public spaces and buildings. Reuters photos showed people outside the National Library in San Salvador after the quake.

Authorities in the region urged residents to follow official safety guidance. They also warned people to stay alert for aftershocks.

Tsunami Threat Was Monitored

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System initially warned that hazardous waves were possible along coasts near the epicenter. The warning covered areas within about 186 miles of the quake.

Officials later said the tsunami threat had passed. Still, Mexico’s navy advised people to stay away from beaches for several hours as a precaution.

Chiapas weather officials said waves up to about 3.3 feet were possible along parts of the Mexico and Guatemala coasts. Local officials in Suchiate monitored coastal areas near the Guatemala border.

Several aftershocks followed the main quake. The USGS reported at least five aftershocks between magnitude 5.1 and 6.

Region Remains Seismically Active

Mexico and Central America sit along active tectonic zones. Strong earthquakes are common in the region, and some have caused major damage in past years.

Friday’s quake was powerful, but early reports pointed to limited impact. Officials continued inspections because damage can take time to confirm, especially in rural or coastal areas.

Residents in affected areas should continue checking alerts from emergency officials. The main takeaway remains clear: the quake shook a wide region, but early reports showed no major damage or loss of life.
