Acer has unveiled a gaming handheld that can transform into a compact laptop. The Acer Project DualPlay Mini combines an 8-inch display, traditional gaming controls and a hidden physical keyboard.
The company introduced the device during its next@acer event in Berlin on Sept. 2. However, Acer emphasized that the DualPlay Mini remains a concept. It has no confirmed price or release date.
Acer Project DualPlay Mini Switches Between Two Modes
The DualPlay Mini uses a flip-and-swivel design. In handheld mode, the screen sits between two familiar sets of gaming controls.
Players can lift the control sections to expose a backlit keyboard. The display can then rotate into position, creating a small laptop-style computer.
The design supports different types of games. Handheld mode offers a console-like experience for action, sports and racing titles. Meanwhile, laptop mode supports keyboard controls for first-person shooters and strategy games.
Acer says players can pair the keyboard with a Bluetooth mouse. The concept can also connect to an external display for work or gaming. Acer describes the device as a system for gaming, email, documents and other everyday tasks.
A Gaming Handheld Designed for Productivity
Most handheld gaming PCs focus on portable entertainment. Acer’s concept explores whether one device could also replace a small laptop.
The keyboard could make Windows applications easier to use. It may also help with messaging, game searches and account setup. Those tasks can feel cumbersome with touch controls or an on-screen keyboard.
Still, the 8-inch display would offer limited space for traditional computer work. Acer has not provided details about the keyboard’s dimensions or typing comfort. The company also has not confirmed whether the design includes a trackpad.
An external monitor and mouse could create a more practical desktop setup. However, that arrangement would reduce some of the device’s portable appeal.
Intel Hardware and Dual-Fan Cooling
Acer said Intel technology powers the DualPlay Mini, but it did not identify the processor. The company also withheld details about memory, storage, screen resolution and battery capacity.
The concept uses a cooling system similar to the Predator Atlas 8. It includes one metal Predator AeroBlade fan and one plastic fan. Acer says its metal fan technology can increase airflow by up to 10% compared with a standard plastic fan under the same conditions.
The back panel includes another unusual detail. Acer placed “Acer 50 since 1976” in Morse code on the cover to mark the company’s 50th anniversary.
Concept Status Leaves Major Questions
Acer introduced the DualPlay Mini alongside the Predator Atlas 7, a conventional handheld headed to stores. In contrast, the company clearly labels the keyboard-equipped model as a concept only. Acer’s announcement does not promise commercial production.
Concept devices often allow manufacturers to test new designs and measure public interest. Acer could revise the DualPlay Mini before any potential release. It could also decide not to sell the device.
Price, weight and battery life would likely shape its appeal. The durability of the rotating display and folding controls would also matter for daily use.
For Texas gamers and mobile professionals, the concept offers an interesting look at how portable PCs may evolve. Consumers should wait for confirmed specifications, independent testing and retail details before treating it as an upcoming product.
