C.J. Stroud extension talks with the Houston Texans remain unresolved before the 2026 regular season. Stroud is reportedly prepared to play the season without a new contract despite receiving what Houston considers a competitive offer.
The two sides still have time to reach an agreement. However, general manager Nick Caserio said negotiations will pause if no deal is completed before Houston’s season opener.
C.J. Stroud Extension Talks Approach Week 1
The Texans open their season against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 13. Caserio said Tuesday that Houston will not continue negotiating with Stroud after the season begins.
If no agreement is reached before Week 1, the team plans to resume discussions during the offseason. Caserio described the conversations with Stroud’s representatives as productive but did not indicate that a deal was close.
Houston has already exercised the fifth-year option on Stroud’s rookie contract. Therefore, the quarterback remains under contract through the 2027 season.
The option carries a fully guaranteed salary of about $25.9 million for 2027, according to ESPN. Stroud will play the 2026 season under the final scheduled year of his original rookie deal.
Texans Reportedly Made a Competitive Offer
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Wednesday that Houston made Stroud an offer the organization considers competitive. The proposal would reportedly place him among NFL quarterbacks earning at least $50 million annually.
Stroud is nevertheless prepared to play the season without an extension, according to people familiar with the negotiations. The current expectation is that he will probably enter Week 1 without a new agreement.
Neither side has publicly confirmed the proposed annual salary, contract length or guaranteed money. Those details are critical when determining the full value of an NFL contract.
The reported offer also should not be treated as a completed or rejected agreement. Negotiations can include several versions of a proposal, including different bonuses, guarantees and options.
According to NBC Sports, Houston appears prepared to place Stroud within the NFL’s group of quarterbacks earning $50 million or more per season.
Stroud Could Bet on His 2026 Performance
Waiting until next offseason carries potential rewards and risks for Stroud. A strong year could increase his value as quarterback salaries continue rising across the league.
Houston would also gain another season to evaluate Stroud before making a major long-term investment. The Texans have reached the divisional round in each of his first three seasons, but the offense has produced uneven results.
Stroud won AP Offensive Rookie of the Year after Houston selected him second overall in 2023. He passed for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns and five interceptions during his debut season.
His passing totals declined over the following two years. Stroud completed a career-best 64.5% of his passes in 2025, finishing with 3,041 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Houston posted a 12-5 record and won a playoff game last season. However, Stroud threw four interceptions during a 28-16 divisional-round loss to the New England Patriots.
The 24-year-old owns a 28-18 regular-season record as a starter. He has also guided Houston to three consecutive playoff appearances, according to NFL.com.
Texans and Stroud Still Have Time
A contract remains possible before the Buffalo game. Still, the latest reporting suggests both sides may be willing to wait until the 2026 season ends.
Stroud has said he is leaving negotiations to his agent while focusing on football. His performance could determine whether Houston’s next offer rises, falls or stays near its current reported range.
For Houston supporters, the immediate focus will shift to the regular season once the deadline passes. Stroud’s play and the Texans’ postseason results will help shape one of the franchise’s most important financial decisions.
