NFL Kicks Off 100th Season

2
To help celebrate the NFL’s 100th season, each week will feature an NFL100 Game of the Week. Each game will be a nod to a momentous game played, a fierce rivalry that spans decades, a matchup of original teams and/or a game in which history was made . The NFL has designated the Packers-Bears contest as the NFL100 GAME OF THE WEEK for Week 1. In arguably the league’s richest all-time rivalry, the Packers and Bears will meet for the 199th time, including the postseason, in a series that spans all 10 NFL decades. The franchises first met Nov. 27, 1921, when the eventual NFL champion Chicago Staleys shut out the Packers, 20-0, but Green Bay leads the series, 97-95-6. Combined, the two organizations have accounted for 22 world championships,13 for Green Bay, nine for Chicago (No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, all-time). The two teams have also combined to put 53 individuals in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 28 from the Bears (No. 1 all-time) and 25 from the Packers (No. 2 all-time), with respect to those who spent the majority of their careers with a club.Welcome to 2019. Expect new teams to earn playoff berths, a few consistent players and clubs to excel again, records to fall and young players to forge ahead as they introduce themselves to our collective excitement. It’s a familiar script, a story that has fueled the league’s popularity for 99 years. The blanks will be filled in come February. What is known this week is that every team holds fast to a dream: Super Bowl LIV in Miami. And with history as an indication, every team has a legitimate shot.

THE FIELD IS OPEN: In 2018, two teams – the HOUSTON TEXANS (AFC South) and CHICAGO BEARS(NFC North) – won their divisions after finishing in last place the year before. In 15 of the past 16 seasons, at least one team finished in first place in its division the season after finishing in last or tied for last place.

Since the NFL expanded to 32 teams in 2002, two clubs have gone “worst to first” en route to a Super Bowl victory – the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles and the 2009 New Orleans Saints.

Since the NFL adopted the 12-team playoff format in 1990, at least four teams every season have qualified for the playoffs after failing to make the postseason the year before. Seven teams that missed the postseason in 2017 – Baltimore (10-6), Chicago (12-4), Dallas (10-6), Houston (11-5), Indianapolis (10-6), the Los Angeles Chargers (12-4) and Seattle (10-6) – earned a playoff berth in 2018.

MOST-EVER SUPER BOWL WINS: The NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS won their sixth Lombardi Trophy last year and begin their quest to break a tie with their Kickoff Weekend opponent, the PITTSBURGH STEELERS, for the most-ever Super Bowl victories. The AFC stalwarts clash to open Sunday Night Football (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC). By winning another title this season, New England would also join Pittsburgh as the only teams to win consecutive Super Bowls on two occasions.

RECORDS WITHIN REACH: New Orleans quarterback DREW BREES (520) needs 20 touchdown passes and New England quarterback TOM BRADY (517) needs 23 to surpass PEYTON MANNING (539) for the most all-time. Brees (34) also needs two games of four-or-more touchdown passes to eclipse Manning (35) for the most four-touchdown games in NFL annals. And, Brees (9,783) needs 387 pass attempts to leap Pro Football Hall of Famer BRETT FAVRE (10,169) for most on the all-time list. Brady will play his 20th season with the Patriots, tying two Pro Football Hall of Famers, Washington’s DARRELL GREEN and the Rams’ JACKIE SLATER, for the second-most seasons with one franchise in NFL history. Detroit’s JASON HANSON (21) owns the league record. Los Angeles Rams defensive tackle AARON DONALD can become the first player in league history to earn three consecutive AP Defensive Player of the Year honors. With a third overall, Donald would tie J.J. WATT (2012, 2014-15) and Pro Football Hall of Famer LAWRENCE TAYLOR (1981-82, 1986) for most all-time. Buffalo Bills running back FRANK GORE (14,748) needs 522 rushing yards to surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer BARRY SANDERS (15,269) for third on the all-time list. Gore (18,544) also needs 611 yards from scrimmage to surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer MARSHALL FAULK (19,154) for fourth on the all-time list. Arizona Cardinals wide receiver LARRY FITZGERALD (1,303) needs 23 receptions to surpass Pro Football Hall of Famer TONY GONZALEZ (1,325) for second on the NFL’s all-time list. Pro Football Hall of Famer JERRY RICE (1,549) holds the career record. Fitzgerald (9) also needs 1,000 receiving yards to tie Pro Football Hall of Famer RANDY MOSS (10) for second on the NFL’s all-time list of most 1,000-yard seasons. Rice (14) holds the career record.

SUCCESS WITH FIRST-YEAR LEADERS: Seven teams enter this season with a new head coach, KLIFF KINGSBURY in Arizona, ZAC TAYLOR in Cincinnati, FREDDIE KITCHENS in Cleveland, VIC FANGIO in Denver, MATT LaFLEUR in Green Bay, BRIAN FLORES in Miami, ADAM GASE with the New York Jets and BRUCE ARIANS in Tampa Bay. Four rookie head coaches have led their teams to the playoffs over the last two seasons: MATT NAGY (Chicago) and FRANK REICH (Indianapolis) in 2018, and SEAN McVAY (Los Angeles Rams) and SEAN McDERMOTT (Buffalo) in 2017. Kingsbury, Kitchens, Fangio, LaFleur and Flores are all first-time head coaches in 2019.

FAMILIAR FACES IN NEW PLACES: Several notable players were on the move during the offseason and preseason, including quarterbacks JOE FLACCO (Denver) and NICK FOLES (Jacksonville); running backs LE’VEON BELL (New York Jets), MARK INGRAM (Baltimore), FRANK GORE (Buffalo) and LESEAN McCOY(Kansas City); wide receivers ODELL BECKHAM JR. (Cleveland), ANTONIO BROWN (Oakland) and DeSEAN JACKSON (Philadelphia) and KENNY STILLS (Houston); tight end JARED COOK (New Orleans); tackles TRENT BROWN (Oakland) and LAREMY TUNSIL (Houston); guard RODGER SAFFOLD(Tennessee); center MITCH MORSE (Buffalo); defensive ends EZEKIEL ANSAH (Seattle), FRANK CLARK(Kansas City), JADEVEON CLOWNEY (Seattle), TREY FLOWERS (Detroit) and CAMERON WAKE(Tennessee); defensive tackles MALIK JACKSON (Philadelphia) and GERALD McCOY (Carolina); linebackers KIKO ALONSO (New Orleans), DEE FORD (San Francisco), CLAY MATTHEWS (Los Angeles Rams), C.J. MOSLEY (New York Jets) and TERRELL SUGGS (Arizona); cornerbacks ROBERT ALFORD (Arizona), BRADLEY ROBY (Houston) and STEVEN NELSON (Pittsburgh); and safeties LANDON COLLINS(Washington); TYRANN MATHIEU (Kansas City), EARL THOMAS (Baltimore) and ERIC WEDDLE (Los Angeles Rams).YOUNG STARS TAKE THE STAGE: Last season, seven rookies – New York Giants running back SAQUON BARKLEY, Seattle punter MICHAEL DICKSON, Los Angeles Chargers safety DERWIN JAMES, Denver running back PHILLIP LINDSAY, Indianapolis guard QUENTON NELSON, Dallas linebacker LEIGHTON VANDER ESCH and Cleveland cornerback DENZEL WARD – earned Pro Bowl honors.

Last year, 39 players age 25 or younger as of Dec. 31, 2018, were selected to the Pro Bowl. And 16 of those 39 were voted AP All-Pro, including New York Jets safety JAMAL ADAMS, Chicago kick-returner TARIK COHEN, Cleveland defensive end MYLES GARRETT, Minnesota defensive end DANIELLE HUNTER, New York Giants kicker ALDRICK ROSAS and the reigning MVP, Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES.

Three quarterbacks – Oklahoma’s KYLER MURRAY (No. 1 overall, Arizona), Duke’s DANIEL JONES (No. 6, New York Giants) and Ohio State’s DWAYNE HASKINS (No. 15, Washington) – were selected in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. At least one rookie quarterback has started a Kickoff Weekend contest in 11 consecutive seasons, the longest streak in the NFL since at least 1950.

This Week, Houston Ballet Brings Back The Ballet That Started It All, Giselle

1

WHO: Houston Ballet

WHAT: Stanton Welch’s Giselle

WHERE: Wortham Theater Center

WHEN: September 6-15, 2019

TICKETS: On Sale Now at houstonballet.org or 713.227.ARTS(2787)

This week, Houston Ballet nods to its beginning as it opens its 2019-2020 season with Giselle. In 1967, Giselle was the first full-length ballet performed by Houston Ballet Foundation, and Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch AM is fittingly bringing it back to kick off the 50th anniversary season.

“I really wanted to honor what brought ballet to Houston and what inspired this city to build a professional ballet Company,” says Welch.

The Foundation served as a school at the time of its first performance of Marius Petipa’s Giselle. Its students, other ballet students and hired professionals from another ballet company comprised the cast and danced with a rented set at Jesse H. Jones Hall for the Performing Arts. Houston’s response to this production would lay the foundation for Houston Ballet’s professional company and its ongoing legacy.

Coming a long way since those humble beginnings, Welch’s version of this iconic ballet has 61 company dancers vying for coveted roles in a production that cost more than $1 million to build. It first premiered and was last seen at the Wortham Theater Center in June 2016. His signature for projecting a strong female voice echoes through the ballet, as its leading lady’s journey spans love, betrayal and redemption.

The two-act ballet is filled with stunning creations by Italian designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno. In addition to these costumes and sets, her designs were seen in last season’s The Merry Widow and will return later this season in Romeo & Juliet.

The score by Adolphe Adam stands the test of time as Welch returned to the 1941 version, which is less edited and commonly known. These additions allowed him to expand on his narrative and gave dancers more time to sink into and exude these deep emotional roles. Just as in 2016, the music will be brought to life by the Houston Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Ermanno Florio.

Join in on Houston Ballet’s celebration of 50 years of creativity and the beginning of the 2019-2020 season with Welch’s Giselle. Learn more and secure your seats at HoustonBallet.org or by calling 713.227.ARTS(2787).

ABOUT HOUSTON BALLET

Celebrating 50 years of creativity, Houston Ballet has evolved from a Company of 16 dancers to one of 61 dancers with a budget of $33.9 million and an endowment of $79.2 million (as of June 2019), making it the country’s fifth largest ballet company. Its Center for Dance is a $46.6 million state-of-the-art performance space that opened in April 2011 and remains the largest professional dance facility in America. Houston Ballet’s reach is global, touring in renowned theaters in Dubai, London, Paris, Moscow, Spain, Montréal, Ottawa, Melbourne, New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and more.

Houston Ballet attracts prestigious leaders in dance. Australian choreographer Stanton Welch AM has served as Artistic Director of Houston Ballet since 2003, raising the level of the Company’s classical technique and commissioning works from dance legends such as Julia Adam, George Balanchine, Aszure Barton, Christopher Bruce, Alexander Ekman, William Forsythe, Jiří Kylián, Edwaard Liang, Trey McIntyre and Justin Peck. Executive Director James Nelson serves as the administrative leader of the organization, a position he assumed in February 2012 after serving as the Company’s General Manager for more than a decade.

Beyond its stage presence, Houston Ballet maintains a strong foothold in continuing to foster a love for dance in future generations. Its Education and Community Engagement program reaches more than 70,000 individuals in the Houston area annually. Houston Ballet Academy trains more than 1,000 students every year, producing more than 50 percent of the elite athletes that comprise Houston Ballet’s current Company.

Nuevo para Disneyland Resort en 2020: Avengers Campus se abre en Disney California Adventure Park con experiencia de Spider-Man y Disneyland Park estrena el extraordinario desfile ‘Magic Happens’

2
Guests can suit up alongside their favorite Super Heroes at the Avengers Campus, beginning in 2020 at Disney California Adventure park at Disneyland Resort. The campus will feature the first Disney ride-through attraction to feature Spider-Man, along with other heroic encounters. (Disney)

Avengers Campus viene a Disney California Adventure

At Least 50 Percent of HCC Histologic Students Employed Before They Graduate

4

HOUSTON (August 30, 2019) –Houston Community College (HCC) is helping to cure cancer and the local job market with its Histologic Technician Program. Instructor Dr. Min He of HCC’s Coleman College for Health Sciences says that half of her students have found jobs before they graduate from the program that plays a crucial role in the diagnosis of cancer.

“There’s a very high demand for these jobs, even at the entry level position, particularly in the Houston area,” said Dr. He, stating that the college is located in the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical center.

Histologic Technicians (HT), also known as Histotechs, are critical in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients, especially patients with cancer. “Histotechs use instruments to process, embed, and section tissue onto slides, using chemicals and dyes to perform tests to demonstrate pathological changes,” said Dr. He.

Within just five semesters, a graduate can earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree and is eligible to be certified by the American Society of the Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) as a Histologic Technician.

Dr. He says that today’s Histotechs are employed in diverse medical settings, ranging from hospitals, reference, research, forensic, or physician’s office laboratories. Other employment opportunities include working in medical supply industries or as medical instrument technicians. Consequently, graduates must have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.

“All of that pays off,” said Dr. He, who adds that students can earn $20 to $25 per hour immediately after graduating, which she reminds could just be a couple of years after graduating from high school.

“They can also earn while they learn,” said Dr. He. For example, since many of her students begin working within the medical center, while still studying at HCC, they are more likely to find jobs there.

She adds that, since M.D. Anderson is also one of the world’s largest cancer centers, some of her students receive offers for full-time positions there before they graduate.

“Histological diagnosis is important in detecting cancer,” Dr. He said. “M.D. Anderson hires a lot of our graduates.”

Que Onda Travels: Bariloche, Argentina

5

Closer to Chile than it is to Buenos Aires, Bariloche — officially San Carlos de Bariloche — is like a world unto itself. Not for nothing has it emerged as one of Argentina’s most sought-after destinations, with skiing, chocolate, and Swiss architecture being just a few of the attractions drawing visitors year-round. There’s truly something for everyone in Bariloche, which is why so few who visit ever want to leave.

WHEN TO GO
July – August

Bariloche is especially gorgeous in its winter, when snow covers the mountains and skiers gather in droves to leave their mark on the fresh powder. Even if you aren’t particularly outdoorsy, the views are so striking that bundling up and braving the crowds is well worth it — especially if you’ve never experienced winter in the southern hemisphere.

DISCOVERIES
Life, Uh, Finds a Way

Jurassic Park may not be real, but at least Parque Nahuelito is. You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy this prehistoric adventure, especially as the 30-plus dinosaur replicas on display are noted for their realism — many are as large as their ancient counterparts, while the rest are to scale.

In addition to the tyrannosaurus rex, velociraptor, and other familiar creatures, the park also has life-size dinosaur bones and other artifacts on hand to both educate and entertain.

The Thunder Up There
Choosing just one of Bariloche’s outdoor destinations is no easy feat, but Cerro Tronador rises above the rest — literally. At 11,660 feet, the volcanic mountain (whose name means thunderer) dwarfs the nearby peaks of Nahuel Huapi Park and offers awe-inspiring views in every direction. Its eight glaciers are melting due to climate change, so make haste — like many natural wonders, Tronador won’t last forever in its current form. (That said, don’t limit yourself if you’re outdoorsy: Circuito Chico, Cerro Otto, and Isla Victoria are all must-sees as well.)

Cabinet of Curiosities
You may not think that a museum featuring taxidermied animals, dioramas, and stratigraphy displays is your thing, but how can you know if you don’t give it a try? Centro Cívico’s Museo de la Patagonia is as odd as some of its exhibits, to be sure, but it’s also hugely fascinating. With collections on everything from aboriginal history and the Conquest of the Desert to prehistory and the museum’s namesake, it’s a vital thread in
Bariloche’s cultural fabric. And for another museum experience that’ll show you why Bariloche lives up to its nickname as the chocolate capital of Argentina, mosey over to the Museo del Chocolate.

A Slice of Switzerland
There’s quaint, and then there’s Colonia Suiza. The area’s first European settlement, it still looks much the same as when it was founded in the late 18th century and today offers curanto — a traditional food whose preparation is a ritual unto itself that visitors can observe. Among the other charming reasons to visit: views of Lake Morano, an artisan market, and fresh empanadas.

WHAT TO EAT
Raise the Steaks

Unless you’re a vegetarian, you’ve no excuse not to eat at a parrilla (steakhouse) at least once during your time in Argentina. Alto el Fuego is the region’s crème de la crème, a small space with big flavors: ribeyes so large you’ll have trouble finishing without help, thick fries, and chorizo all abound. Those in search of something as adventurous as Bariloche itself will gravitate toward Refugio Roca Negra, a cozy spot to indulge in pizza and wine after braving the outdoors.

STAY HERE
Llao Llao Living

Bariloche isn’t the cheapest destination in the world, but those who splurge on Llao Llao Hotel are glad they did so. A five-star resort and spa with every amenity you can think of and
even some you can’t — an 18-hole golf course, solarium, vanishing-edge swimming pools — it’s nestled between Cerro Lopez and Cerro Tronador, but the view of Nuahel Huapi lake is even more breathtaking. For something more economical, consider Hotel Tres Reyes. It’s more conveniently located (15 minutes from the airport, a few hundred feet from the city mall) and offers its own lakeside views, not to mention complimentary drinks upon check-in and regional pastries at the breakfast buffet.
