Midland – Out of Sight

Clothes ain’t in the closet, shoes ain’t under the bedI should’ve believed her when she said what she said: You’ll never change I know you never willI just sat there watching tears rolling over the hillI called her mama and I called her good friendThey said: She called it quits, so boy don’t call here againUp and down these streets looking for her carTried to make it back home, but ended up at the bar
She’s gone (she’s gone, so long), never coming backSo gone (so gone, so gone), the train went off the trackAnd all the king’s horses and all the king’s menCouldn’t put me and my baby back together againSo long (she’s gone, so long), that’s the way you knowShe’s gone (so gone, so gone) and everybody knowsThat I’m going crazy one night at a timeShe’s out of sight and I’m out of my mind
I’d saw you down in Memphis walking in the rainI caught a glimpse of you in Dallas getting off a planeBut it’s all in my head what else can I doShe ain’t drinking anymore, so I’m drinking for two
She’s gone (she’s gone, so long), never coming backSo gone (so gone, so gone), the train went off the trackAnd all the king’s horses and all the king’s menCouldn’t put me and my baby back together againSo long (she’s gone, so long), that’s the way you knowShe’s gone (so gone, so gone) and everybody knowsThat I’m going crazy one night at a timeShe’s out of sight and I’m out of my mind, oh oh, oh oh oh

Johnny Lee – Cherokee Fiddle

0
When the train pulled into the stationRolled up his sleeves, rosined up his bowFiddle upside down, orange blossom special‘Cause if you want to make a living you got to put on a good show
When he’d smell the smoke and the cindersSlick back his hair, opened up his casePlay Cherokee Fiddle, he’d play it for the whiskey‘Cause good whiskey never let him lose his place
He was always there, playing for the minersDevil’s dream was a song they understoodThen he’d go out to OklahomaAnd he’d wait till the train was running and the weather was good
When he’d smell the smoke and the cindersHe’d slick back his hair, opened up his casePlay Cherokee Fiddle, he’d play it for the whiskey‘Cause good whiskey never let him lose his place
Now the Indians are dressing up like cowboysAnd the cowboys are putting leather and turquoise onAnd the music is sold by lawyersAnd the fools who fiddled in the middle of the station have gone
Some folks say they ain’t never gonna miss himOld Fiddle squealed like the engines brakesCherokee Fiddle, he’s gone foreverJust like the music of the whistle that the old locomotives made
So when you smell the smoke and the cindersJust slick back your hair, open up your casePlay the Cherokee Fiddle, play it for the whiskey‘Cause good whiskey will never let you lose your placeNo, good whiskey will never let you lose your placeNo, good whiskey will never let you lose your place

Mayor Turner’s Statement on FHWA and TXDOT Agreement on the I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project

Following this morning’s major news from the Federal Highway Administration and the Texas Department of Transportation, FHWA and TXDOT Sign Agreement to Allow I-45 North Houston Highway Improvement Project to Move Forward | FHWA, the City of Houston has released the following statement:

Mayor Turner has repeatedly stated that the North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) is a potentially transformative project with the chance to chart a new course for transportation in the region. This was the foundation for the Memorandum of Understandings between the City and Harris County, and TxDOT and is now further memorialized by the Voluntary Resolution Agreement (VRA) between the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), including key topics that echo between the agreements:

  • Potential for Footprint Reduction
  • Displacements, Relocations, Housing and Community Mitigation
  • Flooding Mitigation
  • Air Quality Mitigation
  • Potential Green Space Caps
  • Parks, Open Space, Trails, and Bike/Ped Enhancements
  •  Access During Construction
  • Continued Multilingual Community Outreach

“After years of negotiations, the North Houston Highway Improvement Project can now be the project Houston deserves it to be,” said Mayor Sylvester Turner. “A project that addresses I-45’s repeated flooding while maximizing the opportunities for people to stay in their homes and neighborhoods. It is a project that helps people and goods travel through the region while encouraging people to travel between our neighborhoods without impacting them. A project that can help knit back together our downtown and improve the air we all breathe. I thank the many project partners and stakeholders that have brought us to the point, including FHWA, TxDOT, Harris County, METRO, and especially our residents.”

The mitigation measures for the topics identified in the VRA are now a component of the NHHIP environmental review process, with status and weight equal to the Final Environmental Impact Statement and Record of Decision, coupled with enforceability measures and monitoring and reporting requirements.
With the execution of the MOUs and the VRA, the City of Houston is prepared to reengage TxDOT on all segments of NHHIP, restart robust engagement, and see the NHHIP project move from two decades of planning to successful completion.

How Much Did Chris Rock Get Paid for His Netflix Special?

0

It’s no secret that Netflix has been betting big on stand-up comedy. But this weekend marked a landmark moment for the streaming platform with its first-ever live streamed event, which could mean big things for its future in comedy.

Chris Rock’s comedy special Chris Rock: Selective Outrage aired on Netflix Saturday evening, bookended with star-studded pre and post-show specials featuring the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, David Spade, Amy Schumer, and more. This event also doubled as the first time the veteran comedian addressed his infamous slap from Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars.

According to a 2016 report from The Hollywood Reporter, Rock’s Saturday special was part of a $40 million deal he made with Netflix for two stand-up specials. Though Netflix has not confirmed the amount Rock was paid per deal, THR wrote at the time, “The $20 million per special is believed to be more than such A-list comedians as Louis C.K., Jerry Seinfeld and Amy Schumer have commanded.”

Selective Outrage comes almost five years after Rock’s first Netflix comedy special, Chris Rock: Tamborine. The deal was reportedly made following a big bidding war and marked the end of Rock’s previous long-term partnership with HBO.

Considering the stacked roster of comedians who appeared in the pre and post-shows, that night of comedy probably racked up to be a lot more than just $20 million.

Rock spent the hour-long special talking about woke culture, his relationship with his daughters and what it’s like dating as a single father. But he did not hold back when it came to talking about Smith, who slapped him across the face on live television while he was presenting at last year’s Oscars.

The comedian placed much of the blame on Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.

“She hurt him WAY more than he hurt me … everybody called him a bitch. And who’s he hit? Me!” he joked in his special.

Live streaming events may be a valuable market for Netflix to break into, but it’s worth asking if Selective Outrage is actually worth the alleged $20 million price tag.

Texans are forever grateful for our first responders and their loved ones, and the State Texas will always support them in all that they do to keep our communities safe.”

Houston leaders react to looming HISD takeover

0

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) was among the chorus of prominent Houston community leaders to condemn news of a possible state intevention in the district.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) has called for a federal investigation into the state's takeover.

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee has called for a federal investigation into the Texas Education Agency (TEA) after Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner announced Wednesday the state department could take over the Houston Independent School District as early as next week.

In a Wednesday statement, Lee called the TEA takeover “unnecessary, unfair and discriminatory” and said she has had a conversation with the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

Her statement came after Turner broke the news at a Houston City Council meeting alongside council members who agreed the takeover would be an overreach of local government.  According to Turner, the state is poised to replace the HISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Millard House II with state-appointed officials that do not have a disclosed term limit.

The incoming takeover has stirred mixed reviews from the Houston community, where some see it as an overreach while others see the move as inevitable. In February, local organizations, including Community Voices for Public Education, (CVPE) rallied against a January Texas Supreme Court ruling that opened the door for TEA to take over HISD.

At the rally, Houston community members, including HISD educators, teachers, and parents, said they believe the district is moving in the right direction and need funding more than anything.

In addition to organizing, CVPE also said plans to deliver a petition to state lawmakers in the legislative session.

“This is about profits and politics and not about kids,” said Ruth Kravetz, Community Voices for Public Education founder. “I know that HISD has made some missteps, but it happens to be B-rated, triple bond rated, and even if I don’t love every member of the board, they’re elected, and you can vote them out.”

Kravetz also said she sees the TEA takeover as a political move because state officials are basing the move on an older reputation that doesn’t reflect the current state of operations.

“If the governor really cared about our kids, he would fund our schools more and support them,” Kravetz added.

On the other hand, other local groups like Good Reason Houston, an organization that focuses on improving education for students, according to their website, said they don’t have a position on the takeover but will work with whoever leads the board.

“Our organization exists to support Houston area public school districts, including the current administration of HISD – and whomever that may ultimately be – especially given that there are 70,000 students attending schools in HISD that are not improving fast enough to prepare them to thrive in the Houston of tomorrow.”

Houston education advocate Gerry Monroe, a staunch critic of House’s leadership of HISD, called the takeover “karma” for a school district he believes has failed Houston students for years—though he’s not bullish on TEA’s ability to improve district outcomes.
