Valdez, Alvarez Selected for MLB All Star Game

0

A pair of Astros were picked to play in the 2023 MLB All Star game on July 11. Yordan Alvarez, who is currently rehabbing from an oblique strain, and Framber Valdez, who skipped Sunday’s start with a sore ankle, were both picked to be part of the midsummer classic.

Alvarez has already said he will travel to Seattle for the game, but will not participate due to his injury. The Astros recently reported he is up to about 60 percent and should start a minor league rehab stint shortly after All-Star weekend. Valdez’s availability for the game is unclear, but he has said he should be able to start for the Astros this week. That would seem to make him OK to play in the game next week.

This is the second straight selection for both players. Valdez wound up as the winning pitcher in the 2022 game.

Dusty Baker, as the World Series championship manager, will act as the manager for the AL squad in Seattle.

A number of injured players could be back for the Astros soon after the break including Jose Urquidy, Alvarez and possibly even Michael Brantley. The season has been somewhat of a disappointment thus far with a ton of injuries. But, the team remains just four games back of the division-leading Texas Rangers with another game in Arlington on Monday to round out a four-game set.

Even with all the injuries, particularly to a depleted pitching staff, the team leads baseball in ERA (3.58) and has several rookies or young players playing significant roles, a rarity for a team coming off a World Series title.

Rockets Overhaul Roster in Flurry of Deals

0

After not re-upping Stephen Silas in the offseason and hiring new coach Ime Udoka, it was clear that the Rockets were going to make some significant changes to a roster that had been at the bottom of the league for three straight years. It wasn’t enough to select high draft picks that yielded rotation players like Jalen Green, Alperen Sengun and Jabari Smith, Jr. To make the move to “phase two” as they refer to it over at Toyota Center, they needed veteran help.

Over the weekend, they took steps in that direction via a bevy of activity after the official opening of NBA free agency. The resulting deals and signings left them with four new players and the dealing of four of their own to other teams. Let’s break it down.

THE ADDITIONS

Fred VanVleet (3 years, $30 million — third year team is a team option)

This is the marquis signing of the offseason. The 29-year-old point guard is one of the best defensive points in the NBA and is coming off a year where he averaged 7.2 assists and ]two turnovers per game to go with almost 20 points and two steals. He is one of the league’s best in deflections and has a solid shooting stroke from beyond the arc. He immediately becomes the guy Udoka can make his floor general and someone the team can lean on to lead the offense. He’s also an instant defensive upgrade in the backcourt.

Dillon Brooks (4 years, $80 million – sign and trade with Memphis)

Brooks most recent claim to fame is poking at LeBron James during the playoffs in a foolish f-around-and-find-out moment, but the brash young wing is also one of the league’s best perimeter defenders — he was second team all-defense last season. The fact that he inked a four-year deal means the Rockets consider him a part of their long-term plans despite his fiery attitude and sometimes poor decision making on the floor. No doubt GM Rafael Stone and Udoka believe they can channel Brooks into an elite defender and get him back to a player that shoots 37-plus percent from distance.

Jock Landale (4 years, $32 million – only the first year is guaranteed)

While Brooks and VanVleet were high on the Rockets wish list, their desired big man target, Brook Lopez, re-signed with Milwaukee. Still needing depth in the frontcourt, the team opted for Phoenix back up big Landale, who played well for the Suns in last year’s postseason. The Aussie center will provide backup support to Sengun and Smith.

Jeff Green (1 year, $6 million)

The Rockets said they wanted veteran leadership and there might be no one more veteran in the league than Green, heading into his sixteenth NBA season. He’s one of the more well respected players around the NBA and played part of a season in Houston during the 2019-20 season. Green will provide frontcourt depth and certainly a steadying voice in the locker room.

THE SUBTRACTIONS

KJ Martin (traded to the Clippers for two second round picks)

For all his athleticism and slow but steady improvements, Martin was a bit of a round peg trying to be fit into a square hole. He’s too small for the frontcourt, but doesn’t really play the kind of defense or shoot well enough to be a strictly perimeter player. Ultimately, he got caught up in a numbers game with so many other young guys on the roster. This had been coming for a while. It’s a shame the Rockets couldn’t have done it sooner when they might have gotten more in return. In the end, this was about clearing space for other players, both financially and on the floor.

Usman Garuba (traded to Atlanta)

From day one, when Garuba had to arrive late to camp due to his obligations with the Spanish team and promptly got injured, it just felt he could never quite get his footing in Houston. The undersized big man has all the tools to be a very good defensive player in the NBA, and has been working hard on improving his long distance shooting. Hopefully, he can help Atlanta and get his career on track.

TyTy Washington (traded to Atlanta)

Washington could never break into the Rockets rotation with their odd and sometimes frustrating commitment to Daishen Nix, who never managed to be the player the team hoped he would be. With the drafting of Amen Thompson at pick four in this year’s draft, the writing was on the wall for Washington, who could thrive in the right environment.

Josh Christopher (traded to Memphis)

When Christopher was taken with the Rockets final pick in the historic (for the Rockets) 2021, he was the only one to have played college ball. His history as a friend of Jalen Green and his relentless love of running the floor seemed like a great fit for the young squad. By the end of his rookie season, he was a fixture in the lineup, scoring 30 against the T’Wolves in April of 2022. But, his second year saw him slip out of the rotation, appearing in 64 games and averaging just over 12 minutes per. His skills are there, but his inconsistency seemed to be his downfall. He’ll try to bounce back with the Grizzlies.

Houston Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Drunken-Driving Crash That Killed 6-Year-Old Stepdaughter

0

A Houston man was sentenced to 22 years in prison after pleading guilty to felony murder for killing his 6-year-old stepdaughter in a 2021 drunken-driving crash, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced.

“There is absolutely no excuse for driving drunk, especially with children in the car,” Ogg said. “An innocent little girl died because of the criminal conduct of this man and it was felony murder, plain and simple.”

Paul Rodriguez, 32, pleaded guilty to felony murder in the death of Zyra Longoria, who was killed in a crash on the Southwest Freeway near Fountain View in west Houston about 4 p.m. on Oct. 9, 2021. Felony murder means he caused the death of someone while committing another felony, in this case Driving While Intoxicated with a Child.

Rodriguez was intoxicated as he drove a black Honda Accord in and out of freeway traffic with three children: Zyra, the 6-year-old who was killed; a 4-year-old; and a 2-year-old. Rodriguez collided with an 18-wheeler, then hit a red Mercedes and then a box truck, according to investigators with the Houston Police Department.

Zyra flew from the Honda and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She died the next day.

Rodriguez pleaded guilty and agreed to a sentencing hearing in front of a judge. State District Judge Andrea Beall heard evidence during an hours-long hearing on Wednesday and sentenced Rodriguez to 22 years.

Assistant District Attorney Erandy Marquez, who is assigned to the DA’s Vehicular Crimes Division, prosecuted the case. She said Rodriguez had a criminal record including possession of prescription drugs like muscle relaxers and marijuana. On the day of the incident, he had taken both.

“This could have been avoided, but it happened because he decided to consume a cocktail of drugs and then get behind the wheel with three little kids,” Marquez said. “All of his decisions – and this was his repeated pattern of behavior – led to him killing someone.”

She noted that intoxicated-driving crashes can injure or kill drivers, other people on the road and the people in the intoxicated person’s car.

Rodriguez has to serve at least half of the sentence before he is eligible for parole, and he cannot appeal the conviction.

Fourth of July 2023: Making your ride road-trip ready for holiday weekend

0

Are you among the record number of people expected to take a road trip this holiday weekend? Now’s the time to make sure your car won’t leave you stranded on the side of the road.

First, be sure your vehicle has an emergency kit and water in case you get stuck.

AAA Texas expects a record 3.2 million Texas road trippers this holiday weekend, and a record 20,000 calls for roadside assistance, which can be avoided by making a good B.E.T. (Batteries, Engine, Tires)

“Check your Battery, Engine, as well as your Tires,” said Josh Zuber with AAA Texas. “Make sure there’s no corrosion on your battery, that the clamps are good, the battery is not loose, and make sure it’s 3 years old or newer.”

“Look at the belts and the hose, make sure there are no cracks, wear and tear that could put you in some danger,” he added.

Make sure the coolant is filled up and has been flushed according to your manufacturer’s recommendation. And check the tires.  Some tire shops, like Discount Tire, will check them for free.

“Looking at that tire itself, it’s in that caution zone where we do recommend replacement especially going on long road trips during the summer,” explained Adrianne Williams, a Store Manager with Discount Tire.

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association says more than half of all drivers don’t know how to check a tire’s tread.  You can buy a tire tread depth gauge for a few dollars, or use a quarter.

“Flip it upside down and check in several spots on your tire. And if there’s any space between Washington’s head and tread, it’s time to get some new tires really soon,” said Zuber.

You can check the tire’s age by seeing the date it was manufactured printed on the side.

“We do recommend replacement at 6 years of age because tires at six years and older will have a higher risk of tread separation, sidewall bulges, and other tire-related problems. So this tire itself was made in the year 2020,” said Williams.

And check the air pressure. A tire pressure gauge costs under a dollar. Be sure to check your spare tire’s air pressure, too. And remember, the sun wears out wiper blades so replace them every six months.

Thousands of flights canceled as travel chaos threatens Fourth of July weekend

0

Americans may have to put their weekend celebrations on hold. Travelers in the US faced a chaotic week leading up to the Fourth of July weekend as soaring flight delays and cancellations were seen across the country.

From Monday through Wednesday, at least 28,000 flights were delayed each day, and at least 1,200 were canceled, with Monday and Tuesday seeing about 2,200 cancellations each, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) forecast 29 June would be the busiest day for air travel during the summer, with 52,564 scheduled flights. By 1pm ET on Thursday, over 19,000 flights across the country had been delayed and 1,160 had been cancelled, according to FlightAware.

Typically just over a thousand flights are delayed and a few hundred are canceled on a given day. Airlines and federal transportation agencies have struggled with severe weather and staffing issues recently, issues that can cause headaches throughout the airline industry and for fliers even without the record-high travel numbers seen this summer. But the surge in holiday travel has exacerbated the situation.

The Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) daily checkpoint travel numbers, which reports the number of fliers passing through TSA checkpoints, shows that more people have been flying in the days before the Fourth of July weekend this year compared to previous years, including before the pandemic.

The auto insurance agency AAA projects that 50.7 million Americans will travel over 50 miles (80km) for this Fourth of July weekend, with just over 43 million traveling by car. This beats 2019, when 49 million Americans traveled for the holiday, the previous record for the number of Fourth of July travelers.

“What this tells us is that despite inventory being limited and some prices 50% higher, consumers are not cutting back on travel this summer,” AAA said in a statement.

While multiple airlines have been experiencing delays and cancellations, passengers on United have been the most affected over the last week, with the airline seeing over 2,000 cancellations and over 40,000 of its flights experiencing delays, according to FlightAware, the most of any airline.

The huge disruptions affecting the airline are reminiscent of the airline industry in December, when Southwest Airlines’ internal software system crashed after a winter storm caused severe delays and cancellations. Weather events can ultimately lead to staffing issues for airlines, who often schedule crews and pilots on a tight timeline.

In a memo to United employees on Monday, the United CEO, Scott Kirby, said that an estimated 150,000 United customers were affected by delays or cancellations that were exacerbated by FAA staffing shortages. The FAA limited arrivals and departures out of the New York area on 24 June as storms had an impact.

“It led to massive delays, cancellations, diversions, as well as crews and aircraft out of position,” Kirby said. “That put everyone behind the eight ball when weather actually did hit on Sunday and was further compounded by FAA staffing shortages Sunday evening.”

A report on the FAA released on 21 June said that the agency had been facing air traffic controller staffing issues since the start of the pandemic. Twenty of the 26 major air traffic control centers in the country are staffed at below 85% of the staffing threshold. New York’s air traffic control center, which serves the city’s three large airports, is staffed at 54% of the threshold.

Though the FAA has not directly responded to United’s allegations, the federal agency said in a statement that it “will always collaborate with anyone seriously willing to join us to solve a problem”.

On Twitter on Thursday morning, the transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, wrote: “With the exception of United, airlines have recovered to a more typical cancellation/delay rate as of this morning after the severe weather earlier this week.

“FAA will continue to work with airlines to help them minimize disruptions during the busy 4th of July travel weekend,” Buttigieg wrote.

A day earlier, Buttigieg posted a video of himself on a commercial flight saying that the department is “closely watching air travel this week”.

“Weather has been rough, especially in the last four to five days. It caused a lot of cancellations and delays for many passengers around the country,” he said. “We’ve known that summer is going to be a stress test on the system.”

Astroworld tragedy: Travis Scott will not face criminal charges

0

Travis Scott – the rapper and producer who organized the ill-fated 2021 Astroworld Festival – will not be indicted in connection with the crowd crush that left 10 people dead and injured hundreds at the event, District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Thursday.

A grand jury also decided not to indict additional people connected to the festival who were part of the police investigation, including chief of security John Junnell and festival director Brett Silberstein.

“In this instance, the grand jury of the 228th District Court of Harris County found that no crime did occur, that no single individual was criminally responsible,” Ogg said.

“It is tragic that 10 innocent people were killed while trying to enjoy an evening of music and entertainment, something many of us do routinely and without a second thought to our safety. But a tragedy isn’t always a crime, and not every death is a homicide,” Ogg also said. “This grand jury’s determination has no impact on the many civil lawsuits pending.”

The victims died of “compression asphyxia,” according to the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences. The youngest victim was nine years old. Multiple lawsuits have been filed against Scott and other organizers, including the entertainment company Live Nation. The defendants have denied the allegations that negligence in the planning and promotion of the festival contributed to the deaths.

“While waiting patiently for the District Attorney’s decision to not file charges, Travis Scott has been inaccurately and wrongly singled out, despite stopping the show three separate times and being unaware of the events as they were unfolding,” Scott’s spokesperson Ted Anastasiou told CNN Thursday. “Now that this chapter is closed, we hope for the government efforts to focus on what is most important – stopping future heartbreaking tragedies like Astroworld from ever occurring again.”

“Criminally speaking there is no case,” Scott’s attorney, Kent Schaffer told CNN by phone.

Schaffer delivered the news to Scott, who is out of the country for a concert.

“He is ecstatic. It’s a huge weight that has been removed from his shoulders. He’s looking forward to getting back home after being cleared by the grand jury,” Schaffer told CNN.

The grand jury met for six hours and homicide detectives testified, according to Schaffer.

Houston Police Department chief Troy Finner said on Thursday that the department will release the entire criminal offense investigation in the coming weeks.

The Astroworld tragedy left 10 people dead when the concert quickly turned into chaos as concertgoers were crushed, with many struggling to breathe as people crowded near the stage during Scott’s performance.

The turmoil prompted officials to declare the concert a “mass casualty event,” police said at the time.

It was unclear at the time what Scott saw from the stage and whether he was aware of the conditions in the crowd. He continued to perform nearly an hour after injuries were reported, but did not know of the mass casualty declaration until the following morning, his lawyer said at the time.

Earlier in the day, authorities at the festival reported unruly behavior, with a handful of injured attendees taken to the hospital the day of the festival, Houston Fire Department logs showed at the time.

These earlier incidents are part of what led to the crowd conditions, with Houston Police Department’s lead homicide investigator Mike Barrow saying during Thursday’s press conference that a key cause of the compaction in the crowd was the early large number of concertgoers gathering at Scott’s main stage in anticipation of his show.

In a statement released after the deadly event, Scott said he was “distraught by the situation and desperately wishes to share his condolences and provide aid to (the victims) as soon as possible.”

Texas Department of Public Safety must release documents related to Uvalde school shooting, judge rules

0

The Texas Department of Public Safety must release records related to last year’s deadly Uvalde elementary school shooting, a district court judge in Austin ruled Thursday.

District court judge Daniella Deseta Lyttle ruled in favor of a coalition of media outlets – including CNN – that sued the state department last year, arguing that the department violated state law by broadly refusing to release records related to the May 2022 massacre of 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School.

The suit was brought by more than a dozen major news outlets seeking transparency and insight into the botched response of law enforcement who arrived at the scene and waited for more than an hour before confronting and killing the gunman, who had holed up inside a pair of connected classrooms with the victims.

The public safety department had disclosed some information, but dismissed requests for other records on the grounds that a local district attorney says she is conducting an ongoing investigation.

The department has been asked to produce dashcam videos from police vehicles, recordings and transcripts of 911 calls, records of the training public safety department officers received and numerous other documents.

The department can redact some information from the records before releasing them as allowed by law, and must provide a list of proposed redactions to the court by August 31, the judge said. A hearing is expected to be held in September to discuss the department’s proposal.

In the wake of the massacre, families and public officials slammed the Texas Department of Public Safety for its reluctance to share information and shifting narratives on authorities’ actions that day.

“The Texas Department of Public Safety has offered inconsistent accounts of how law enforcement responded to the Uvalde tragedy, and its lack of transparency has stirred suspicion and frustration in a community that is still struggling with grief and shock,” Laura Lee Prather, a First Amendment lawyer who represents the plaintiffs, said when the suit was filed.

The other news organizations participating in the suit are ABC, CBS, NBC, The New York Times, Wall Street Journal owner Dow Jones, The Washington Post, ProPublica, and local TV and media companies Gannett, Graham Media, Scripps and TEGNA.

A Texas House investigative committee tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the shooting found “systemic failures and egregious poor decision making” by law enforcement and other entities, according to a preliminary report the panel released in July 2022.

The report outlined a series of failures by several law enforcement agencies and described “an overall lackadaisical approach” by authorities on the scene.

The report said that first responders “lost critical momentum” by treating the situation as a “barricaded subject” scenario instead of an active shooter situation.
