District Attorney Ogg thanks Harris County Commissioners for funding prosecutor positions

0

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg thanked county commissioners Tuesday for approving $7.5 million in funding to fill existing prosecutor positions in areas such as Domestic Abuse and Sex Crimes and increase the pay of entry-level hires.

By a vote of 4-0, commissioners voted in favor of the proposal that essentially unfreezes the funds that had previously been earmarked for existing positions and salary increases.

“This vote was crucial to our role in keeping the public safe,” Ogg said. “The county must adequately fund prosecutors and police. Defunding puts the community at risk.”

Ogg spoke before a room packed with county law enforcement and senior prosecutors as she asked the court to make good on their own budget promises of February 2022.

The funds are to be used to fill open prosecutor and other positions and increase the pay of new prosecutors to be competitive with other prosecutor offices in the region.

Those who voted in favor of the funding include Commissioners Rodney Ellis, Adrian Garcia, Tom Ramsey and Jack Cagle. County Judge Lina Hidalgo abstained.

“With violent crime at a zenith, it is more important than ever to fund prosecutors, the public’s last line of defense against repeat violent offenders,” Ogg sai

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to making our community safer through evidence-based prosecution and equal justice for all.  This means guaranteeing a fair process to obtain a just result for the victim, the accused and the community in every case.

Ground stop issued at Hobby Airport due to runway lighting issue, officials say

0

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a ground stop at William P. Hobby Airport Monday evening as airport personnel work to resolve an issue with the lighting system on a runway, according to airport officials.

On its Twitter page, Hobby Airport says its crews are working diligently to restore operations as soon as the runway is deemed safe.

For now, there are no incoming or outgoing flights.

The airport urges travelers to check the status of arriving and departing flights with the operating airline prior to coming to the airport.

‘Where are their parents?’: Brothers in blue support death penalty sought for suspects charged in murder of Deputy Almendarez

0

Prosecutors are asking for the death penalty in the fatal shooting of a veteran Harris County deputy who was gunned down after interrupting three suspects who were allegedly trying to steal his catalytic converter.

Joshua Stewart, 23; Fredarius Clark, 19; and Fredrick James Tardy, 17, were each charged with capital murder in the shooting death of Deputy Darren Almendarez.

On Monday, a procession was held transporting Almendarez’s body from the Medical Examiner’s Office to the Brookside Funeral Home in northeast Houston.

On the same day, Stewart appeared before a judge in probable cause court. Clark was also due in court, but waived his right to appear before a judge. No bond was given for either suspect.

Outside the Harris County courtroom, David Cuevas, president of the Harris County Deputy’s Organization, was asked about the alarming number of young adults and teens having access to firearms used to commit crimes.

“Here’s the bigger question, where are their parents? Where is the responsibility?” Cuevas fired back. “People that follow the law know the proper way to obtain guns. It’s these criminals that have no home training. Do their parents even care about them? Because they are

out of control themselves.”

There will be inflatable games, a rock wall to climb, train rides for the little kids, face painting, a senior tent will provide a place to gather for our seniors and the Houston Zoo’s ZooMobile will bring some animals to meet.
