Judge Declares Mistrial in Harvey Weinstein Rape Retrial

0

A New York judge declared a mistrial Friday in Harvey Weinstein’s rape retrial after jurors said they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict.

The closely watched case centered on allegations by Jessica Mann, a hairstylist and aspiring actor, who accused Weinstein of raping her in 2013. Weinstein denied the accusation, with his attorneys arguing the encounter was consensual.

Jury Unable to Reach Verdict

The Manhattan jury, made up mostly of men, deliberated for three days before informing Judge Curtis Farber that they could not agree on a decision. The judge initially instructed jurors to continue discussions, but later declared a mistrial after the deadlock remained unresolved.

The outcome leaves the rape charge against Weinstein undecided following multiple trials in New York.

Previous Conviction Overturned

Weinstein’s original 2020 New York conviction involving Mann and another accuser was overturned by an appeals court, leading to a retrial. A separate retrial last year also failed to produce a verdict after jury deliberations collapsed amid internal disputes.

During testimony, Mann said she had consensual encounters with Weinstein during their complicated relationship but alleged the 2013 incident was nonconsensual. Defense attorneys pointed to continued contact between the two after the alleged assault as part of their argument.

Weinstein Remains Behind Bars

Despite the mistrial, Weinstein remains incarcerated due to separate sex-crime convictions in California. The former movie producer, now 74, has repeatedly denied assault allegations, saying he “acted wrongly” but did not commit sexual assault.

The case remains one of the most high-profile legal battles connected to the MeToo movement era.

Trump Warns Iran to Reach Nuclear Deal or Face Military Action

Donald Trump said Iran must agree to a nuclear deal with the United States or risk severe military consequences, during a wide-ranging interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity that aired Thursday night from China.

Trump said Iran’s choices were simple: “make a deal or get annihilated,” while emphasizing that he would prefer a diplomatic resolution.

“I don’t want to do that, but we have the greatest military,” Trump said during the interview.

Trump Says Iran Rebuilt Some Capabilities

The president acknowledged that Iran has managed to restore portions of its military and nuclear-related infrastructure despite previous U.S. actions targeting the country’s nuclear facilities.

“They built it up a little bit. We’ll take it out in one day. It’ll all be gone,” Trump said.

Trump also suggested his administration is losing patience with ongoing negotiations involving Tehran.

Tensions Rise Over Nuclear Sites

Trump claimed the United States is closely monitoring three targeted Iranian nuclear sites with surveillance systems and warned that any attempt by Iran to move enriched uranium could trigger military action.

According to Trump, the U.S. has “nine cameras” focused on the facilities and would respond with airstrikes if Iran attempted to access the material.

The comments come as tensions remain high over Iran’s nuclear program and ongoing international negotiations aimed at limiting Tehran’s nuclear capabilities.

Ganado ISD closed on Friday after several students call out sick, district says

GANADO, Texas (KTRK) — Leaders say a stomach bug is racing through Ganado Elementary School and the district is closing all of its campuses Friday to contain it.

Ganado ISD posted on social media that more than 90 elementary students either missed school or were sent home since Wednesday.

That’s about a quarter of the school’s total enrollment.

Ganado ISD, 90 minutes southwest of Houston in Jackson County, has only three schools and fewer than 800 students.

Superintendent Jonathan Szymanski told Eyewitness News he closed the schools so the bug could run its course and so that staff can deep clean classrooms ahead of finals next week.

Gulf breeze cranks up, storm chances return to Houston next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Get ready for that humid Gulf air to make a big come back in the days ahead. Strong onshore winds will pump up the humidity, setting the stage for multiple rain chances next week.

The Gulf breeze is gently blowing this morning, which brings a slight increase in humidity through the weekend, but comes with some benefits as well. The breeze will help clean up the air and prevent widespread ozone pollution like that observed on Wednesday and Thursday.

You’ll also notice more cloud cover in the sky, but temperatures should still manage to top out around 90 degrees.

When does the moisture surge back in?

You’ll really feel the humidity going up by Sunday as that Gulf breeze gets even stronger. The rise in moisture levels will also bring small chances of rain into the forecast over the weekend. We have a 10% chance Saturday and 20% chance Sunday.

What’s the latest on rain chances next week?

Multiple jet stream disturbances will track overhead next week bringing more widespread rainfall to Southeast Texas. These disturbances are difficult to time out more than 24 hours in advance, so rain chances are still a bit uncertain. For now we have rain chances at 40% to 60% for most of the work week. Some of the storms could be strong-to-severe early in the week due to the unstable air, then we may see more of a street flooding risk materialize later in the week as the ground becomes saturated.

Shark Sightings Expected to Rise Along US East Coast This Summer

Scientists Say Warmer Waters Are Driving Shark Migration

Marine experts say beachgoers along the U.S. East Coast should expect more shark sightings in the coming months as warming ocean temperatures bring dozens of shark species north for the summer.

Researchers at the New England Aquarium recently confirmed the first white shark activity of the season off Massachusetts after a dead grey seal with shark bite wounds was discovered near Martha’s Vineyard.

White Sharks Moving North

Scientists say shark activity typically increases during summer and peaks in the fall. A juvenile white shark named “Nori” was also recently tracked off the coasts of New York and New Jersey as part of migration monitoring by OCEARCH.

Experts estimate that more than 30 shark species travel north along the Atlantic coast each year after spending winter in warmer southern waters.

Why More Sharks Are Being Seen

According to marine biologists, shark sightings rise in summer for several reasons:

  • Warmer waters attract sharks closer to shore
  • More people are swimming, surfing, and boating
  • Shark populations in the Atlantic are recovering due to conservation efforts
  • Drones, cameras, and social media make sightings more visible

Different shark species are more common in certain regions. Great white sharks are frequently spotted near Cape Cod because of the area’s large seal population, while bull sharks and tiger sharks are often found in warmer Gulf and Florida waters.

Shark Attacks Still Rare

Despite increased sightings, experts stress that shark attacks remain extremely uncommon. Data from the Florida Museum of Natural History shows there were 65 confirmed unprovoked shark bites worldwide in 2025, with fewer than 10 fatal attacks globally on average each year.

Scientists say sharks are vital to healthy marine ecosystems and usually avoid humans.

Beach Safety Tips

Experts recommend swimmers stay alert, avoid areas with large schools of fish or seals, and pay attention to rip current warnings — which remain a far greater danger at beaches than sharks.

Shark sightings can also be tracked through the Sharktivity app, which provides real-time updates along the Atlantic coast.

Trump and Xi Hold Final Round of Beijing Summit Talks

US-China Relations, Trade, and Iran War Dominate Meeting

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a second round of high-level talks in Beijing on Friday as their multi-day summit came to a close.

The leaders met at Zhongnanhai, the Chinese Communist Party’s leadership compound, where they toured gardens, shared tea, and attended a working lunch before Trump’s departure back to the United States.

Taiwan and Iran Create Tension

One of the biggest issues during the summit was Taiwan. According to Chinese state media, Xi warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could push both nations toward conflict, though he said stable relations remain possible through cooperation.

The ongoing U.S. conflict with Iran also loomed over discussions. Trump is seeking international support to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global shipping route. China, which remains Iran’s largest oil customer, could play a key diplomatic role.

In an interview during the visit, Trump said Xi expressed interest in helping negotiate a resolution to the conflict.

Trade and Business Deals in Focus

Trade and technology were also central topics at the summit. Trump said he pushed China to further open its economy and strengthen business ties with American companies.

Several major U.S. executives joined the president in Beijing, including Elon Musk of Tesla and SpaceX, Tim Cook of Apple, and Jensen Huang of NVIDIA.

The White House said Trump hopes to secure new purchasing agreements with China in the aerospace, agriculture, and energy sectors.

Leaders Emphasize Cooperation

During earlier meetings at the Great Hall of the People, Trump praised Xi as a “great leader” and highlighted their long-standing relationship.

Xi responded by saying China and the United States “both stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation,” adding that the two global powers should act as partners rather than rivals.
