Liz Barraza’s Father Speaks Out on Fifth Anniversary, Believes Shooter Was Hired

0

Five years after the tragic shooting death of Tomball-area resident Elizabeth “Liz” Barraza in her own driveway, her father, Bob Nuelle Jr., is breaking his silence about his beliefs regarding the identity of the killer. Liz Barraza, a 29-year-old Star Wars charity group member, was gunned down on January 25, 2019, while setting up for a garage sale at her home in the 8600 block of Cedar Walk Drive.

The assailant, caught on surveillance video, approached Liz, shot her four times, and quickly fled the scene. The shooting, deemed a planned attack, occurred just before 7 a.m., as Liz’s husband, Sergio Barraza, had left for work. The suspect, disguised and wielding a revolver, left no shell casings, and nothing was stolen from the Barraza residence.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office detectives have been investigating the case, relying on video footage from neighborhood cameras that captured the suspect’s vehicle, identified as a dark-colored Nissan Frontier. Despite the leads, an arrest has not been made.

In an interview with ABC13’s Jessica Willey, Nuelle revealed his belief that the shooter was hired, making the case more challenging as the investigators may be dealing with two unknown parties without names or addresses. Nuelle described the day of Liz’s murder as “the worst day” of his life and emphasized the absence of known enemies for his daughter, who dedicated her life to serving others through the 501st Legion charity group.

The FBI and Texas Rangers have joined the investigation, and no suspects have been ruled out. Liz’s parents maintain a website, WhoKilledLizBarraza, to keep the public informed and highlight the $50,000 Crime Stoppers reward for information leading to an arrest.

A news conference is scheduled at Crime Stoppers on Thursday, where family members and investigators will provide updates on the case. Nuelle remains optimistic that the mystery surrounding Liz’s murder will eventually be solved. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online or through the Crime Stoppers mobile app.

Former President Trump Launches Personal Attacks and Conspiracy Theories Against Haley Ahead of South Carolina Primary

In the aftermath of her defiant concession speech following the New Hampshire Republican primary, Nikki Haley, the last remaining challenger to Donald Trump, is bracing for a wave of political attacks. Trump, who already targeted Haley’s Indian ethnicity and accused her of being a China “patsy,” now amplifies a “birther” lie, questioning her eligibility to run for president.

As calls for Haley to drop out of the race intensify, analysts predict a relentless onslaught of mudslinging against the former South Carolina governor. Rick Wilson, co-founder of the anti-Trump Lincoln Project, warns that South Carolina’s notorious dirty politics await Haley, describing it as a “buzzsaw” she cannot avoid.

Trump, facing felony indictments, used his New Hampshire victory speech to assail Haley’s character, appearance, and baselessly suggested she is susceptible to a criminal investigation. “I don’t get too angry. I get even,” Trump declared.

Haley, known for her cautious approach, has shifted gears to directly confront Trump. Capitalizing on a confusing Trump rant, she suggested that her former boss is experiencing cognitive decline at 77.

Now, as the battle moves to South Carolina, known for its cutthroat politics, analysts anticipate a “brutal, nasty, and ugly” campaign. Trump, with a stronghold on the state’s Republicans, is expected to make Haley’s political life challenging.

The Palmetto State has a history of campaign outrages, including dirty tricks and personal attacks. Haley, during her 2010 gubernatorial run, faced accusations of extramarital affairs and derogatory comments about her Indian heritage.

South Carolina’s Republican chairman, Drew McKissick, acknowledged the state’s rough political landscape, warning that “Politics ain’t beanbag” and emphasizing their use of “sharp elbows.”

Despite the uphill battle, Haley’s supporters assert her readiness for the onslaught. Mark Harris, a strategist for a pro-Haley super PAC, highlights her history of winning primaries against the odds.

However, Trump continues to target Haley’s Indian ancestry, using nicknames and questioning her citizenship. In response, Haley focuses on Trump’s age, citing instances of confusion. With Trump’s campaign expected to escalate its attacks, Haley faces a crucial month leading to the South Carolina primary, seen as a make-or-break moment for her candidacy.

Jason Kelce’s Shirtless Gesture Makes Memorable First Impression on Taylor Swift

Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce recently found a unique way to ensure that meeting Taylor Swift was an enchanting experience. During the Jan. 21 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, Kelce celebrated his brother Travis Kelce’s touchdown by removing his shirt, leaving the Grammy-winning singer “wonderstruck.”

In a revelation on the Jan. 24 episode of the New Heights podcast, Travis Kelce shared Taylor Swift’s positive reaction, quoting her saying, “Tay said she absolutely loved you.” Despite the unconventional celebration, Jason Kelce believed that his charm would leave a lasting impression on the pop sensation.

However, not everyone was thrilled with Kelce’s impromptu shirtless celebration. The center’s wife, Kylie Kelce, reportedly expressed her displeasure, cautioning him to be on his best behavior before meeting Taylor Swift. Jason acknowledged his wife’s concerns but remained confident that even in his worst moments, Taylor would see the best in him.

“This is part of the Jason Kelce charm. I want to make my best first impression. This is my best chance,” the 36-year-old center stated.

Travis Kelce chimed in, humorously acknowledging that his brother’s “best first impression” was, in fact, the worst impression ever, but he believed in building from that point onward.

The shirtless celebration became a viral sensation, with Travis Kelce expressing delight at the response. Referring to the photos, he mentioned, “Everybody is saying ‘Put that thing in the Louvre.’ I honestly might get somebody to f–king make that portrait. That is epic and a moment I’ll never forget.”

The recent Chiefs game not only marked Taylor Swift’s first encounter with the entire Kelce family but also her 11th time cheering for Travis from the bleachers. Despite potentially becoming an anti-hero for some NFL fans, Taylor expressed her unwavering support for her man in a TIME’s Person of The Year profile in December.

“I’m just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads,” Swift stated, emphasizing her focus on supporting her partner in the midst of the unconventional celebration that left her “wonderstruck.”

HPD’s Human Trafficking Investigators Share Social Media Safety Recommendations To Prevent Grooming and Recruiting of Victims Online

By Indira Zaldivar & Edward Saenz

Social media serves as one of the modern strategies employed by human traffickers to groom and recruit victims.

Human trafficking, a contemporary form of slavery, warrants increased awareness as criminals generate billions of dollars annually by coercing individuals into exploitative and illicit activities.

In recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month, the Houston Police Department cautioned the public about potential indicators of human trafficking through social media and provided safety recommendations for online activities.

“Social media is the platform most used by traffickers to identify the vulnerabilities of victims,” stated Houston Police Department Officer Mayra Seay.

Traffickers often target vulnerabilities such as unemployment and lack of social safety nets. Additionally, they entice victims with false friendships or promises of a luxurious lifestyle or better job opportunities.

To reduce vulnerability on social media, Seay emphasized the crucial recommendation of rejecting friend requests from strangers and verifying the authenticity of profiles sending such requests. Safety guidelines include refraining from sharing personal information, intimate photos, and identifying details online, as predators may exploit this sensitive information to coerce victims.

“Traffickers use social media to recruit their victims,” Seay explained. “If a profile is not private, they can see what victims like and enjoy doing for fun. They use that information to approach the victim and establish a friendship.”

“When the victim trusts that person, they then use that information to try to make false promises, lure them out of their homes, and make them victims of human trafficking.”

In January alone, the Human Trafficking Rescue Alliance of Southeast Texas rescued 18 people from human trafficking, half of whom were minors, according to Houston Police Department Officer Robert Medel. The youngest victim rescued by HTRA was 13 years old.

“Traffickers do not discriminate based on race, sex, or age,” noted Medel.

For parents and guardians of minors using social media, officers recommended monitoring online activities, including contacts and passwords, cautioning minors about interacting with strangers, and refraining from sharing identifying information online.

Given Houston’s status as a hotspot for human trafficking, the officers encourage individuals, regardless of legal status, to report any suspicions of human trafficking by calling 713-308-8600.

HISD is Seeking Community Input on School Year Calendar

By Jessika Leal

The Houston Independent School District is seeking input on a proposed district calendar that includes a longer academic year and more time in school for students. The deadline to provide feedback is 5 p.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024.

Last month the HISD Board of Managers voted unanimously to become a District of Innovation.

As part of the district’s plan to become a District of Innovation (DOI), two extended school year calendars are being considered. In mid-January, certain HISD staff members and stakeholder groups—including the Teacher Advisory Committee, all principals, the District Advisory Committee, and leaders from all four geographic divisions in the District—had the opportunity to provide input on a few initial calendar options. From this input two potential calendars were submitted for the upcoming school year.

The second phase of the process is seeking feedback from families and staff. The recommended calendar will be submitted to the School Board for their consideration on February 8.

Click HERE to complete the survey and share feedback.

The DOI law was passed by the Texas Legislature in 2015. The law allows traditional school districts more local control over education programs and operations. This legislation provides flexibility including exempting themselves from education- related state laws like class sizes, educator certification and contracts.

Kia Recalls Over 101,000 Cars and SUVs Over Potential Roof Hazard

0

Kia America is initiating a recall of more than 101,000 cars and SUVs due to a potential safety hazard related to the vehicles’ roofs, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The federal safety regulators issued the recall on Monday after receiving reports of safety issues related to the roof molding of the affected vehicles.

The safety concern revolves around the possibility of the roof molding becoming loose or detaching while the vehicle is in motion. The NHTSA suggests that this issue may stem from improper installation during the vehicle assembly process. Warning signs of the problem include “visible lifting of roof molding or noise while driving,” as outlined in a safety recall report by regulators.

“A detached roof molding can create a road hazard for other vehicles, increasing the risk of a crash,” warned the NHTSA.

Owners of the affected Kia models, particularly the Carnival from 2022 to 2024 and the Sportage from 2023 to 2024, are advised to be vigilant for any signs of the potential hazard. The recall addresses the safety concerns by inspecting the roof molding and replacing or securing it as needed, with the service provided free of charge by dealers.

Notification letters to owners are expected to be dispatched by March 15. Kia customers who have concerns or questions about the recall can contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542, referencing the recall number SC292. Additionally, owners can reach out to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov for further assistance.

This recall adds Kia to the list of automakers addressing safety concerns in their vehicles, emphasizing the importance of promptly addressing potential hazards to ensure road safety.
