Humble ISD Student Suffers Burns on Playground Slide

Child Injured at Park Lakes Elementary

A 10-year-old special education student at Park Lakes Elementary in Humble ISD was hospitalized with second-degree burns after going down a playground slide during recess.

Mother Shares Concerns

The girl’s mother, Teresa Moncada, told our news partner ABC13 Houston that her daughter Savanah, who has spina bifida, went down the slide three times before realizing the pain.

“I’m a strong mom, but I broke down after seeing that,” Moncada said. Doctors later confirmed the burns at the emergency room.

District Responds

Humble ISD confirmed it is investigating the incident. In a statement, the district said staff noticed marks on the student’s skin, and the nurse advised immediate medical care. Officials are reviewing video and interviewing staff to determine what happened.

Parents Call for Awareness

Savanah’s father, Leo Lemus, urged changes to prevent similar injuries, noting that playground equipment can become dangerously hot in high temperatures. Moncada added that teachers should be more alert to the needs of children with disabilities and that parents should consider clothing choices on hot days.

Kentucky Cheerleader Accused After Newborn Found Dead in Closet

Grim Discovery Near Campus

Police in Lexington, Kentucky, found a dead infant wrapped in a towel inside a plastic garbage bag in a home near the University of Kentucky campus. Officers pronounced the baby dead at the scene.

Mother Identified as Student-Athlete

Authorities identified the mother as 21-year-old Laken Snelling, a University of Kentucky cheerleader. She faces charges of abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and concealing the birth of an infant.

Admission and Arrest

According to an arrest citation, Snelling admitted to giving birth, cleaning the scene, and placing the infant and cleaning supplies in a trash bag, which police later found in a closet. The coroner’s office will determine the cause and manner of death. It is not yet clear if the baby was born alive.

University Statement

The University of Kentucky confirmed Snelling had been a member of its cheerleading team for the past three seasons but deferred further comment to police. Snelling is from White Pine, Tennessee, and was booked into Fayette County Jail before bonding out.

Lower humidity expected next couple of days, but tropical moisture returns this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — If you use your imagination, you might notice a hint of a “fall-ish feel” in the air the next couple of days. The reason for that is a dry northerly breeze has pushed tropical moisture away from Texas, and that lower humidity will lead to some delightful weather on Thursday morning.

Temperatures will heat up into the mid 90s during the afternoon, and there is an Air Quality Alert for the possibility of high ozone pollution levels. Even though the air is drying out, there is still a 10% chance you could encounter a stray shower.

How nice will it feel on Thursday?

It will feel rather delightful Thursday morning, especially north of I-10 where lows will dip into the upper 60s. Dry air does heat up efficiently, so we are in for a dry heat Thursday afternoon as temperatures push into the upper 90s.

So what’s in store for us this weekend?

It will be hot and humid with lows in the mid 70s and highs in the low 90s,which is fairly typical in early September. There will also be at least a 20% chance for a downpour Saturday, and that rain chance doubles up to 40% Sunday as tropical moisture pushes back overhead.

What is happening in the tropics?

A tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic has a high chance for development and becoming Gabrielle. While the Gulf is quiet now, we continue to see signs activity will pick up across the Atlantic basin by mid-September. Meanwhile we have now hit the time of year where we pay closer attention to Pacific hurricanes that can send their moisture and rains toward Texas, and Hurricane Lorena may do just that early next week. Appeals Court Blocks Trump’s Use of Alien Enemies Act

A federal appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump cannot use the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport migrants accused of belonging to the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.

Court Decision

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, one of the nation’s most conservative courts, issued a 2-1 decision rejecting Trump’s attempt to apply the wartime law during peacetime. Judges agreed with immigrant rights groups who argued the law was never meant for use against criminal organizations.

ACLU Response

“This is a critically important decision reining in the administration’s view that it can simply declare an emergency without any oversight by the courts,” said Lee Gelernt, an ACLU attorney who argued the case.

Deportations and Controversy

The Trump administration had deported alleged Tren de Aragua members to a prison in El Salvador, claiming U.S. courts had no jurisdiction there. More than 250 deported migrants have since returned to Venezuela under a July agreement.

Historical Context

The Alien Enemies Act has only been used three times in U.S. history — during the War of 1812 and both World Wars. Trump’s legal team argued that Tren de Aragua posed a national security threat tied to Venezuela’s government, but the court disagreed.

What’s Next

The ruling may be appealed to the full 5th Circuit or taken directly to the U.S. Supreme Court, which is expected to have the final say.

Man Charged After Fatal Shooting of 11-Year-Old Playing ‘Ding-Dong Ditch’ Prank in Houston

A 42-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly shooting an 11-year-old boy who was taking part in a door-knocking prank in southeast Houston.

Shooting Details

The shooting happened around 10:55 p.m. on Saturday when the boy, identified as Julian Guzman, and his friends were playing “ding-dong-ditch,” a prank that involves banging on doors and running away. Police say Guzman was shot in the back and collapsed about a block from the home. He was pronounced dead at a hospital on Sunday afternoon.

Suspect Arrested

The suspect, Leon Gonzalo Jr., was arrested Tuesday morning and booked into Harris County Jail on a murder charge. Authorities said Gonzalo initially spoke with police after the shooting but was released. He was taken into custody again once the child’s death was confirmed. A search of the home uncovered a large number of firearms.

Police Say No Self-Defense

According to Houston police, witnesses reported that the shooter came out of his house and fired into the street as the children ran away. “In my opinion, it doesn’t look like any type of self-defense,” Sgt. Michael Cass said.

The prank is part of the so-called “door-kicking challenge,” a social media trend where kids record themselves banging on or kicking doors before running off. The challenge has been linked to other recent incidents across the U.S., including gunfire in Texas and repeated harassment in Arizona.

A federal judge has ruled against President Donald Trump’s deployment of National Guard troops and Marines in California, calling it unlawful under the 1878 Posse Comitatus Act.

No “Rebellion” Justifying Action

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer wrote that Trump acted without legal basis when he sent troops to Los Angeles during protests against immigration enforcement in June 2025.
