Texans Earn First Win with 26-0 Shutout

0

The Houston Texans notched their first victory of the season with a commanding 26-0 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, marking the team’s first shutout in nearly 15 years.

Defense Dominates

Houston’s defense smothered the Titans, recording its third franchise shutout and first since a 29-0 win over Tennessee in 2010. Rookie quarterback Cam Ward struggled, completing just 10 of 26 passes for 108 yards and throwing one interception.

Marks Shines as Dual Threat

Rookie Woody Marks scored twice—once on a 17-yard touchdown reception and again on an 18-yard run—while tallying 69 rushing yards and 50 receiving. Quarterback C.J. Stroud threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns, including a 24-yard strike to fellow rookie Jayden Higgins.

Key Plays Seal the Game

After two early field goals by Ka’imi Fairbairn gave Houston a 6-0 halftime lead, the Texans erupted in the fourth quarter with three touchdowns. Derek Stingley’s interception set up the Higgins score, and Marks’ late rushing TD capped the rout.

Titans’ Struggles Continue

The loss dropped Tennessee to 0-4, extending its losing streak to 10 games dating back to last season—matching its longest skid since relocating from Houston in 1997. Frustration is mounting for second-year coach Brian Callahan and veterans like Jeffrey Simmons, who called out the team’s poor play.

Pass Rush Punishes Rookie QB

Danielle Hunter led a relentless Texans pass rush with two sacks, pushing his career total past 100. The Texans recorded multiple hits on Ward, who has been sacked 17 times this season.

Trump Hosts Netanyahu for Gaza Ceasefire Talks

President Donald Trump welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the White House on Monday, saying he is “very confident” a Gaza peace agreement is near. The meeting follows Trump’s weekend hints of an imminent 21-point ceasefire plan.

Key Disputes Remain

Sources told ABC News that Washington and Jerusalem still differ on three core issues: the role of the Palestinian Authority in Gaza’s future, the extent of Israeli security control, and the timetable for Hamas disarmament. Details of Trump’s plan have not been made public.

Israeli Minister Sets Hard Conditions

Far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich outlined six demands for Netanyahu, including permanent Israeli military presence around Gaza, full Hamas disarmament, and rejection of any independent Palestinian state. He also opposed involvement by the Palestinian Authority or Qatar in post-war governance.

Heavy Strikes and Rising Toll

The Israel Defense Forces reported 140 strikes across Gaza in the past 24 hours. Gaza’s Health Ministry said 50 people were killed and 184 injured during the same period, bringing the total death toll since the war began in October 2023 to over 66,000.

Regional Tensions Spread

The IDF intercepted a missile launched from Yemen, part of ongoing attacks by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement. Israeli forces continue operations in Gaza City despite mounting international pressure for a ceasefire and worsening humanitarian conditions.

Trump Signals Optimism

Over the weekend, Trump teased “something special” in the Middle East, suggesting unprecedented cooperation among regional leaders. He previously said any deal would secure the release of hostages and “end the war.”

NATO Scrambles Jets as Russia Strikes Ukraine

0

NATO fighter jets and air defense units were put on high alert early Sunday following a major Russian drone and missile attack on Ukraine, the Polish Operational Command said.

Dutch F-35 stealth fighters and a German Patriot missile system were deployed, and airspace near Lublin and Rzeszow was briefly closed. The alert ended after about three-and-a-half hours with no Polish airspace violations reported.

Largest Combined Strike Since Early September

Kyiv was the primary target of the overnight Russian strikes, with additional attacks reported in Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, and Odesa. Ukraine’s air force reported 593 drones and 50 missiles launched, making it the largest combined strike on Ukraine since Sept. 7. Defenders downed or suppressed 566 drones and 45 missiles, but five missiles and 31 drones still struck 16 locations.

Casualties and Damage

At least four people, including a 12-year-old girl, were killed in Kyiv, and 14 others were injured. Damage occurred at residential buildings, a medical facility, warehouses, private homes, cars, and a children’s educational center. In Zaporizhzhia, 31 people—including three children—were injured as high-rise apartments and other structures were set ablaze. Overall, Ukraine’s Interior Minister reported at least 70 injuries across the country.

Zelenskyy Calls for Stronger International Action

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the “cowardly” attacks, urging increased global measures to target Russia’s energy exports. He emphasized that Moscow “wants to continue fighting and killing” and called for a robust response from the U.S., Europe, G7, and G20.

Continued Tensions and Flight Restrictions

Russian authorities reported downing at least 41 Ukrainian drones and temporarily restricted flights at several airports, including Zhukovsky International in Moscow and others across the country. Ukrainian officials warned that the intensity of Russian attacks is expected to increase in the coming days.

Imelda Poised to Bring Life-Threatening Flooding

0

Forecasters warn that Tropical Depression Nine will strengthen into Tropical Storm Imelda as it moves northwest across the Atlantic. Heavy rain and dangerous surf could hit the southeastern U.S., with the potential for flash flooding early in the week.

Possible Hurricane Strength

Imelda could briefly reach hurricane status by late Monday or Tuesday before weakening. Its exact track remains uncertain, and it may interact with powerful Hurricane Humberto in a rare Fujiwhara effect, where two storms rotate around each other.

Current Location and Path

As of Sept. 28, the storm sat about 100 miles west-southwest of the central Bahamas, moving north-northwest at 7 mph with maximum sustained winds near 35 mph. The center is expected to pass over the Bahamas and parallel Florida’s east coast before approaching the Carolinas and Georgia.

Rainfall and Flooding Risk

Forecasters predict 5 to 10 inches of rain across coastal parts of North and South Carolina, with some areas potentially receiving 8 to 16 inches. Far eastern Georgia to central Virginia could see 2 to 4 inches. AccuWeather warns that such rainfall can cause widespread, life-threatening flooding if the storm stalls.

Preparation Urged

The National Hurricane Center advises residents to prepare now. Stock disaster supplies, review insurance coverage—especially for flooding—and create a family evacuation and communication plan. Strengthening homes and trimming trees can help reduce damage before the storm’s arrival.

Sunny and seasonal conditions continue through the weekend and beyond

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We’ve got several days of delightful mornings in the forecast with warm, sunny afternoons.

What a beautiful day on the way! Today is essentially a repeat of what we experienced Saturday, starting in the 60s, with lots of sunshine warming highs to 90 degrees in the afternoon. Don’t forget the sunscreen and to stay hydrated if you’re headed to the Texans Game! Reminder that these sunny and warm days could also allow for unhealthy levels of ozone pollution could pop up. Ozone is a lung irritant that can cause a dry cough and asthma attacks in sensitive individuals.

When does the humid air return?

The higher humidity levels may hold off until after the first weekend of October! Dew points each afternoon through next week will bottom out in the 40s and 50s, making for some really nice weather. And while we have this lower humidity and drier air in place, there is an increased risk for potential wildfire spread if one were to begin.

Are we slipping back into drought?

Well, that is the one downside to all this low humidity and below normal rain totals since September 1. Our rain chances are near zero percent for the next 1-2 weeks, and the warm, dry air will keep drying out the ground. Unusually dry conditions now cover most of Southeast Texas, and soon moderate drought could return in the absence of any rain.

What is happening in the tropics?

Hurricane Humberto is now a major hurricane over the central Atlantic, and newly designated Potential Storm Nine is predicted to eventually become Hurricane Imelda before bringing a flooding rain threat to the Southeast U.S. next week. For a thorough update and in-depth video on what’s happening in the tropics, head to our tropical update page.

Gen X Faces Retirement With Anxiety and Regret

Generation X—those roughly 45 to 60—are nearing retirement age but remain worried about their financial future. Surveys show many regret delaying savings, fear outliving their nest eggs, and feel unprepared for rising costs.

Falling Short of the “Magic Number”

Northwestern Mutual’s 2025 Planning & Progress Study found Gen X believes they need about $1.6 million for a comfortable retirement, higher than the national average. Yet most have saved only two to three times their annual income, and more than half expect to outlive their funds. Nearly half plan to keep working after retirement, often out of necessity.

Lingering Effects of the Great Recession

Federal data shows Gen Xers ages 45–54 held a median net worth of about $247,000 in 2022—less than boomers had at the same age when adjusted for inflation. Economists say the 2008 financial crisis hit Gen X especially hard, making recovery slower and savings more difficult.

Market Jitters and Inflation

An Allianz Life survey reports that over half of Gen X fears another market crash, with only 19% believing now is a good time to invest. Seven in ten say inflation has hampered their savings, and eight in ten worry rising prices will derail retirement plans.

Late Starts and Missed Opportunities

According to the CFP Board, the typical Gen Xer began saving for retirement around age 30, years later than millennials. Many cite high housing costs, job gaps, and modest early-career earnings for the delay. Only 37% are satisfied with their savings, and more than half wish they had planned sooner.

A Call to Plan—Even Now

Financial experts urge Gen Xers to work with advisers and create formal retirement strategies, stressing it’s never too late to plan. “You can’t, if you’re retiring in four or five years, make up for a major loss right now,” Allianz’s Kelly LaVigne warned in an interview with USA Today, highlighting the urgency as the generation approaches its “crunch time.”

Halloween Arrives in Stores Months Early, Projects Record-breaking Season

0

If you spotted ghosts and skeletons on shelves around the Fourth of July, you’re not imagining things. Retailers began rolling out Halloween items months ahead of October, driving projected 2025 spending to a record $13.1 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.

Tariffs and Trade Strategy

Roughly 90% of holiday merchandise is imported from China. Industry experts say U.S. tariffs disrupted orders earlier this year, prompting some retailers to stock Halloween goods as early as June “as a hedge against trade risk.” Disguise costume company CEO Tara Cortner explained that steep tariff rates caused delays and reduced product volume, so stores pushed inventory out sooner to manage costs and consumer demand.

The Rise of “Summerween”

A growing trend dubbed “Summerween” encourages decorating and celebrating Halloween during summer months. Retailers have embraced it, finding customers eager to plan displays and purchase costumes well before fall.

Psychology of Spooky Spending

Marketing professor Daniele Mathras links the appeal to mortality salience—the heightened awareness of death as summer fades. “People engage in escapism or distraction through consumption,” Mathras said. Buying Halloween décor or costumes can help ease that anxiety.

Social Media Boost

Social platforms amplify the excitement, Cortner noted, allowing fans to share elaborate decorations and costumes. “Halloween is fun and entertaining,” she said. “It’s something everyone can agree on and enjoy.”

Italy and Spain Escort Greta Thunberg’s Gaza-Bound Flotilla

Italy and Spain have sent naval vessels to protect a flotilla carrying international activists, including climate advocate Greta Thunberg, as it heads toward the Gaza Strip, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Protection After Drone Incident

The Global Sumud Flotilla, made up of a few dozen boats with several hundred passengers, reportedly faced unidentified drone explosions earlier this week that damaged part of the fleet. In response, both the Spanish and Italian navies are providing escorts and stand ready to dispatch rescue vessels if needed.

Mission to Break Gaza Blockade

Israel has repeatedly warned the flotilla to turn back. Thunberg, speaking via livestream from the boats, said the group is peacefully carrying food, baby formula, medical supplies, and water. “We are sailing to break Israel’s illegal and inhumane siege,” she said.

Anticipated Israeli Response

The ships are expected to reach Gaza next week, where they could face Israeli interception. Thunberg made a similar attempt in June, when Israeli forces detained her and deported her after stopping her vessel.
