Who killed Gary White?

Crime Stoppers and the Houston Police Department’s Homicide Division need the public’s assistance identifying the suspect responsible for a Murder.

On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at approximately 9:16 p.m., Gary White was killed in the 9000 block of Sterlingshire St. in Houston, Texas. During the investigation, the victim was discovered shot multiple times in the parking lot and died as a result of their injuries.

The family of Gary White is requesting the community’s help with identifying the suspect responsible for this murder.

2 deputies shot in Katy neighborhood, suspect dead, authorities say
Two Harris County deputies have been shot in the Katy area, law enforcement officials say.

The suspected shooter was pronounced dead at the scene, according to HCSO’s watch command.

Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez says the shooting happened in the 6600 block of Amberfield Lane.

Deputies were called to the scene around 8 p.m. when someone inside the residence reported a man firing a weapon, Gonzalez says. Officials said the suspected shooter and the 911 caller were related.

Authorities described the situation as an “ambush” saying when deputies arrived, the 43-year-old suspect pointed his weapon at law enforcement and opened fire.

Deputies exchanged gunfire, ultimately shooting the suspect who died at the scene.

During the exchange of gunfire, the two deputies were injured. Investigators said the deputies are 27 and 28 years old.

Gonzalez said the deputies did not appear to have life-threatening wounds. One was shot in the leg and one had a graze to his ear.

Deputies also said that the suspect was out on a personal recognizance bond for aggravated assault of a family member from a case from 2020.

Free COVID-19 vaccinations and testing available at dozens of Houston Health Department-affiliated sites week of February 14, 2022

HOUSTON – The Houston Health Department is announcing the schedule for sites offering free COVID-19 vaccinations and testing during the week of February 14, 2022. More than 20 sites offering vaccinations and more than 30 testing sites are on the schedule for the week.

Vaccination and testing at health department-affiliated sites does not require proof of residency, citizenship, or insurance.

Site locations, schedules, and appointment information is available at HoustonHealth.org or by calling 832-393-4220.

Fixed Vaccination Sites

The department’s new vaccination incentive program will award 12 people $1,000 gift cards and provide $50 gift cards to hundreds of additional people.

People who get their first dose or booster shot at eligible health department vaccination sites between January 29 and March 10, 2022, will be entered into drawings for $1,000 gift cards. Two $1,000 winners will be selected every Friday through March 11 for a total of 12 winners over six weeks.

Any dose of Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are available at the department’s fixed sites, located at:

Health center and multi-service center vaccination sites close at 11:30 a.m. on the second Wednesday of the month.

Pop-up Vaccination Sites

The department and its partner agencies will offer Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson vaccinations at a pop-up site located at:

Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines are authorized for ages 18 and up and Pfizer is authorized for ages 5 and up.

In-Home Vaccination

Free in-home COVID-19 vaccination is available to qualifying older adults, people with disabilities, and veterans.

People may call 832-393-4301 to about qualify for the program.

Testing Sites

The department and its partner agencies offer dozens of free COVID-19 testing sites across the city.

A list of testing sites and schedules is available at HoustonHealth.org or by calling 832-393-4220.

The CDC recommends people who have symptoms and most people who had close contact (within 6 feet for a total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period) with someone with confirmed COVID-19 be tested for COVID-19 infection.

Dos víctimas fueron trasladadas vía aérea al hospital Memorial Hermann. Otra persona, sospechosa del apuñalamiento, fue trasladada a un hospital local en ambulancia con heridas que no ponen en peligro su vida. De acuerdo con las autoridades, un total de cuatro personas resultaron heridas.

El campus y la administración del distrito están trabajando estrechamente con la policía para completar una investigación exhaustiva. EXCLUSIVE – Appeals Court upholds 20-year sentence for man who gunned down prominent attorney James Garza over parking space

A Texas appeals court upheld the murder conviction and 20-year prison sentence for a man who fatally shot Houston-area attorney James Garza over a disabled parking space in 2017, Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg announced Monday.

“This was a senseless murder over a petty complaint,” Ogg said. “The killer confronted a man over a parking space for people with disabilities after the post office was closed for the day, then claimed self-defense after he opened fire.”

William Anthony Hall, 73, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2018 after being convicted for the May 2017 murder of 67-year-old attorney Garza.

The lawyer, who did not have a disabled parking sticker, had stopped to pick up his mail from his post office box at the post office on Broadway.

Hall, who was licensed to carry a concealed handgun, parked in one of the other disabled parking spaces and then confronted the attorney about parking his car in a space reserved for motorists with disabilities.

Even though he initiated the confrontation, Hall told police he shot Garza after feeling threatened during the argument. He said Garza had become physical with him, so he shot him once in the chest with a handgun.

However, an envelope Garza was holding had a bullet hole in it, indicating he was holding it against his chest when he was shot, not swinging a fist at Hall.

“The Houston Police Department, our office and our prosecutors did a stellar job in presenting the facts of this case to a jury,” said Ruben R. Perez, Bureau Chief of Special Crimes. “We especially wish to thank the victim’s family for their patience as the case made its way through the judicial system.  Ultimately, justice was served.”

Hall was acting as a vigilante when he took the law into his own hands for an offense that is a minor misdemeanor, Ogg said.

“Owning a gun comes with an enormous amount of responsibility,” Ogg noted. “Harris County jurors are smart, and they know you can’t start a fight and then claim self-defense when you kill someone.”

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Mary McFaden.

Hall appealed the verdict and prison sentence, and the 14th Court of Appeals in Houston recently affirmed both.

Born and raised in Texas City, Garza was well-known in the community. He was drafted and served in the Army as a reconnaissance photographer during the war in Vietnam. After returning home, he worked as a typesetter at the Houston Chronicle and went to night school to earn his business degree at the University of Houston, then a law degree from Texas Southern University.

He became general counsel of the Chronicle, a position he held until the Hearst Corporation bought the Chronicle in 1987. He had a successful private law practice and spent his leisure time playing golf.

Advocates call on state candidates to “Break Up with Fossil Fuels” for Valentine’s Day

Organizers say that there’s too much fossil industry influence in state politics, which has affected policy decision-making from fixing the energy grid to eliminating methane emissions from oil and gas. Several candidates have responded by committing to refusing large donations from the oil, gas, and coal industries.

TEXAS – This Valentine’s Day advocates are urging candidates for Texas public office to “break up with fossil fuels” by refusing campaign donations from the fossil industry. The digital campaign pressured candidates for Texas public offices (Governor, Lt. Governor, Railroad Commissioner, State House, and State Senate) to sign the “No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge” which commits candidates to “…adopt a policy to not knowingly accept any contributions over $200 from the PACs, lobbyists, or SEC-named executives of fossil fuel companies…” before the first day of early voting for the Primary Elections.

Several candidates responded by committing to refuse large donations from the oil, gas, and coal industries. The list includes Jasmine Crockett, U.S. House TX-30; Shenita Cleveland, U.S. House TX-30; Jessica Mason, U.S. House TX-30;  Greg Casar, U.S. House TX-35; Subramanian “Nam” Namrata, State House District 14; Ron Reynolds, State House District 27; James Talerico, State House District 50, David Alcorta, State House District 50, Cody Arn, State House District 51, Matt Worthington, State House District 51, Robert Reynolds, State House District 51; Christopher Rector, TX State House 97; and Aurelia Wagner, State House District 147.

Candidates have expressed positive responses to the pledge, saying they don’t want to be viewed as beholden to the fossil fuel industry.

One of the pledge advocates, Corey Troiani with Texas Campaign for the Environment, expressed frustration at the lack of grid reform after Winter Storm Uri. “ It’s the one year anniversary of the storm, and our state leaders have failed to hold that industry accountable for their bad practices including price gouging, market manipulation, rampant pollution, and meddling with sensible regulations that protect public health. It’s no coincidence that many state politicians who continue to fail us are those who have taken large checks from the oil and gas industry.”

Other organizers took up the “no fossil fuel money” and “break up with fossil fuels” message by  creating filmed skits featuring an unlikable businessman-introduced as a fossil fuel executive- wallowing after being dumped by a candidate for Texas public office. In one skit the executive cries in the shower, wearing a full suit. In another, the candidate is shown jubilantly running through a field barefoot, ripping up a check from the executive, and winning her race.

“It was very cathartic to act the part of a politician who gets the backbone to stand up for what’s right,” said SJ Stout and organizer with Texas Campaign for the Environment. “You can easily imagine the kind of dynamic – just like a toxic relationship – where predatory power-players lure politicians into doing what they want. The spike in political donations from the fossil fuel industry after the Winter Storm Uri is an example of that. Fossil fuels are buying influence that keeps them immune from social and economic consequences.”

Kevin Patterson, with Sunrise Movement Dallas, also worked on putting the pledge in front of candidates. “As candidates, year after year, ask young people for their support to tackle key issues like climate change, it’s important that they don’t make promises to fight for our future and take money from the same corporations destroying our future. It’s more important than ever for candidates to run on a bold climate platform with taking the no fossil fuel money pledge to show they will stay true to their word.”

Advocates for the pledge say they aren’t stopping anytime soon, and that next steps include showing up at candidate forums and taking the pledge to winners of each district race to get them on record for the General Election in November.

Eilish halted her concert in Atlanta over the weekend to help an audience member get an inhaler — a move that Ye appeared to take as a diss to rapper Travis Scott.

Billie Eilish on Thursday responded to Ye’s recent comments that he would pull out of Coachella unless Eilish apologized to rapper Travis Scott.

Over the weekend, videos shared on social media showed Eilish halting her concert in Atlanta to help a fan in the crowd get an inhaler — a move that Ye, formerly Kanye West, took as a diss at Scott.

In one clip, Eilish said: “We’re taking care of our people, hold on. I wait for people to be OK until I keep going.”
