Ukraine Peace Talks Continue in Miami

Peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia moved forward in Miami this weekend, with officials describing the discussions as “constructive.” Talks are expected to continue into Sunday as U.S. negotiators explore a potential new format that could broaden participation.

Proposed Multinational Format

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said U.S. officials suggested a structure that would include Ukraine, the United States and Russia, with possible involvement from European representatives already present in Florida. Zelenskyy shared the update after meeting with Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro in Kyiv.

Russian Envoy Signals Progress

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, arrived in Miami for the talks and confirmed that discussions with U.S. officials were ongoing. Dmitriev said negotiations were proceeding constructively and would likely extend into Sunday, according to Russia’s state-run Tass news agency.

Ukrainian and European representatives also met with American counterparts earlier in the week. Chief Ukrainian negotiator Rustem Umerov said the parties agreed to resume contacts soon, signaling continued diplomatic engagement alongside the Miami talks.

Putin Maintains Hardline Position

Despite renewed negotiations, Putin showed no signs of softening Russia’s demands during his annual press conference. He reiterated that peace would only be possible if Ukraine abandons NATO aspirations and withdraws from territories claimed by Russia, again asserting that Russian forces are advancing militarily.

Fighting Continues Amid Diplomacy

As talks progressed, both sides continued long-range strikes. Ukraine reported that Russia launched nearly 100 drones overnight, most of which were intercepted or suppressed, while Russia said it shot down several Ukrainian drones. The exchanges underscored the ongoing intensity of the conflict even as diplomatic efforts advance.
