The box office is roaring back to life, with ticket sales up more than 100% compared to the same weekend last year.

Leading the surge is Warner Bros.’ Sinners, directed by Ryan Coogler and starring Michael B. Jordan. Originally expected to battle The Accountant 2 for the top spot with $20–$25 million, Sinners is now projected to earn an impressive $42–$44 million after a strong $13 million Friday.

Following its $48 million debut last week, Sinners could record one of the smallest second-weekend drops ever for a non-holiday release. Thanks to stellar audience scores and the best reviews of Coogler’s career, the supernatural vampire drama has become a true word-of-mouth phenomenon, on track to cross $120 million domestically by Sunday.

Action, Sci-Fi, and Gaming Fuel the Weekend

Several other major releases are contributing to the box office explosion:

The Accountant 2 Scores Big

Amazon MGM Studios’ The Accountant 2, starring Ben Affleck, is aiming for $23–$25 million. A solid A- CinemaScore and strong reviews (76% on Rotten Tomatoes) have helped it stay competitive.

The sequel reunites Affleck with director Gavin O’Connor and features Jon Bernthal, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Daniella Pineda, Allison Robertson, and J.K. Simmons. The story follows Affleck’s character as he teams up with his estranged brother and a Treasury agent to uncover a deadly conspiracy.

Revenge of the Sith Celebrates 20 Years

Disney’s 20th anniversary rerelease of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is on track for $21–$23 million — potentially reaching $25 million. If it hits the higher end, it would be among the biggest rerelease openings ever, behind 1977’s Star Wars reissue.

The renewed love for the prequel trilogy has been fueled by new generations of fans, as well as appearances by Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor in Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series.

A Minecraft Movie Still Going Strong

Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie continues to perform well, maintaining a strong presence in its fourth weekend.

Smaller Debuts

Screen Gems and Sony’s horror release Until Dawn is expected to open to a modest $7–$8 million, rounding out the top five.

A Weekend to Remember

With Sinners, The Accountant 2, Revenge of the Sith, and A Minecraft Movie all drawing large crowds, the weekend marks a major comeback for theaters — and the excitement is only just getting started.
