Trial opens in case against former Uvalde school officer

Nearly four years after the deadly shooting at Robb Elementary School, jury selection is underway in the criminal trial of former Uvalde school police officer Adrian Gonzales, marking a rare attempt to hold a law enforcement officer criminally responsible for a mass shooting response.

Charges tied to delayed police action

Gonzales faces 29 felony counts of child endangerment and abandonment, one for each of the 19 students killed and 10 children who survived in classroom 112. Prosecutors allege he failed to confront the gunman despite hearing shots, knowing the shooter’s location and being trained to respond to active shooter situations. Authorities waited 77 minutes before officers fatally shot the gunman.

A rare prosecution of police

The trial is being held in Corpus Christi, about 200 miles from Uvalde. Legal experts say cases like this are uncommon, as prosecutors seldom charge officers over their actions during mass shootings. Gonzales and former Uvalde schools Police Chief Pete Arredondo were both charged in June 2024, though Gonzales is being tried first and alone. Arredondo’s case remains on hold due to a related federal lawsuit.

What prosecutors must prove

To secure a conviction, prosecutors must show Gonzales had a legal duty to act — not just a moral one — and that he failed to follow his training. Each charge carries a possible sentence of up to two years in prison, though Texas judges and juries have wide discretion in sentencing.

Defense disputes allegations

Gonzales has pleaded not guilty. His attorneys argue he is being unfairly blamed for systemic failures and maintain he acted to protect students under dangerous conditions. The defense is expected to rely on evidence such as drone footage to challenge the prosecution’s timeline and claims.

Broader implications

If Gonzales is convicted, it would be the first known case in which a police officer is held criminally accountable for how they responded to a mass shooting. For families affected by the May 24, 2022, tragedy that killed 19 children and two teachers, the trial represents a long-awaited step toward accountability.

Harris County Pct. 3 deputy constable accused of assaulting 3 nurses, including a pregnant woman

0

By Mo Haider, ABC13 Houston

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Investigators say three nurses who were working at Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital last Thursday were attacked by a patient who was waiting for an MRI.

According to court documents, that patient was a Harris County Precinct 3 Deputy Constable. He now faces felony assault charges.

It was New Year’s Day when, investigators say, Harris County Precinct 3 Deputy Constable Sgt. Robert Earl Nobles Junior went into Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital as a patient and left with assault charges.

According to court documents, Nobles attacked three nurses who were working that day.

The first incident, according to those court records, happened when one of the nurses heard him screaming. It contends when she went to check on him, he hit her in the face. Court documents state she was hit so hard that “the defendant’s strike knocked her to the floor.”

Moments later, he allegedly ran towards a nurse who was 26 weeks pregnant and who tried to call security.

That’s when he “struck her in the head twice with the printer, causing her to fall on the floor on her stomach,” court records say.

Nobles didn’t stop there, according to the court filings, which allege he ran towards the ICU unit and punched another nurse, knocking her unconscious.

Investigators say hospital surveillance video matches the nurses’ allegations. A spokesperson with Pct. 3 says he’s been relieved of duty and is still in the hospital. He is not in custody yet.

Record-breaking warmth this week before cold front cools down Houston again

0

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A lot of weather changes are on the way this week, starting with a chance for fog on your Monday morning drive, followed by record warmth for a few days. A cold front will arrive ahead of the weekend to bring a chance for thunderstorms and chilly weather for the Chevron Houston Marathon.

Moisture returning Monday morning will limit our cooldown to bottom out around the 50 degree mark. It will also bring a chance for patchy fog, especially north of I-10. Sunshine will help burn off the cloudy layer through the morning, allowing highs to reach into the mid-to-upper 70s.

Is this warmup going to be as hot as it was the week of Christmas?

Not exactly, but we do have a few days popping into the low 80s, starting on Tuesday. This means more records could fall during the first full work week of the New Year. Sea fog will also be a possibility as the humid air returns around midweek. A strong cold front will pass through late Friday. That will end our streak of above normal temperatures and bring cool weather for the entire weekend.

Are we expecting any rain or severe weather with Friday’s front?

We do expect the front to produce a chance for thunderstorms. For now we have the rain chance at 40%, but that rain chance will climb as our confidence grows in the frontal timing. Severe weather looks unlikely, but it cannot yet be ruled out given how warm and humid the air will be ahead of the front.

How’s marathon weekend looking?

Chilly! Friday’s front will knock us back into more typical winter territory Saturday and Sunday. Expect a steady north wind at 20 mph Saturday, limiting highs to the mid 60s. Temperatures at the start of the marathon on Sunday will be in the low-to-mid 40s. Highs on Sunday will only climb into the upper 50s under a mostly cloudy sky with a north breeze around 15 mph. There’s also a chance for rain, but we have rain chances at just a limited 10%.

Michael B. Jordan Opens Up About Therapy After ‘Black Panther’

0

Michael B. Jordan says playing Erik Killmonger in Marvel’s Black Panther took an emotional toll that lingered long after filming wrapped, prompting him to seek therapy to recover from the role.

Struggling to Shake Killmonger

In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Jordan said the character “stuck” with him after the 2018 film. He explained that therapy helped him talk through the experience and learn how to decompress after fully inhabiting a character, something he was still figuring out early in his career.

The Isolation Behind the Performance

Jordan said he immersed himself deeply in Killmonger before shooting, spending long periods isolated and barely speaking to family. He noted that the character’s lack of love and history of betrayal fueled his anger and frustration, which made the role especially heavy to carry.

Learning to Decompress

Reflecting on the process, Jordan described acting as a largely solitary journey, from auditioning to preparation. Through therapy, he realized the importance of talking and letting go of emotional weight left behind by intense roles.

A Landmark Film

Jordan starred opposite the late Chadwick Boseman in Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther, alongside Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright and others. The film became a cultural phenomenon, earning $1.34 billion worldwide after its February 2018 release.

Denmark, Greenland Push Back on Trump Remarks

Leaders in Denmark and Greenland on Sunday urged U.S. President Donald Trump to stop suggesting the United States should take over Greenland, after he reiterated the idea in an interview with The Atlantic. The comments reignited diplomatic tensions between Washington and the Danish Kingdom.

Frederiksen: Greenland Is Not for Sale

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected Trump’s remarks, saying the United States has no right to annex any part of the Danish Kingdom. She urged Washington to halt what she described as threats toward a close ally and emphasized that Greenland’s people have made clear they do not want to be taken over.

Greenland Leaders Call Comments Disrespectful

Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also condemned the statements, saying it was wrong and disrespectful for Trump to link Greenland to Venezuela and military intervention. His comments followed Trump’s claim that the U.S. “needs” Greenland for defense purposes.

Venezuela Comparison Raises Alarm

Trump’s remarks came a day after the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, fueling concern in Denmark that similar rhetoric could be applied to Greenland, which remains a self-governing territory within the Danish Kingdom.

Strategic Importance of the Arctic Island

Greenland’s location between Europe and North America makes it vital to U.S. missile defense, while its mineral resources have drawn increased attention as Washington seeks to reduce reliance on China. In December, Trump named Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, a move that sparked fresh criticism from Copenhagen and Nuuk.

Autonomy and Danish Support

Greenland gained the right to declare independence under a 2009 agreement but continues to rely heavily on Danish subsidies. Denmark has worked to improve relations with Greenland while also boosting Arctic defense investments in an effort to manage tensions with the Trump administration.

Flights Halted Across Puerto Rico and Caribbean

0

Thousands of travelers were stranded Saturday, Jan. 3, after the Federal Aviation Administration temporarily suspended most U.S. commercial flights to and from Puerto Rico and parts of the Caribbean. The pause was tied to heightened security concerns following U.S. military activity in Venezuela, grounding flights at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan and several regional airports. Service began resuming Sunday, Jan. 4, after restrictions expired at midnight.

Passengers Left Waiting Overnight

The sudden shutdown left many passengers stuck in terminals overnight with little information. Airline apps showed mass cancellations, customer service lines grew long, and travelers rushed to airline counters to secure scarce rebooking options. Some passengers reported receiving basic refreshments, while others said lodging and transportation assistance was limited.

Families Scramble for New Plans

Michele McNeil, returning from a family vacation in St. Thomas, learned her JetBlue flight through San Juan had been canceled. Unable to rebook through the app or reach customer service, she secured a backup United Airlines flight days later. JetBlue’s earliest option, she said, was not until the following weekend.

Airlines Resume Operations

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the restrictions had expired, allowing flights to resume at 13 affected airports. American Airlines added about 3,700 seats through extra flights across Puerto Rico, the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, and other Caribbean destinations. United Airlines said it expected to operate most scheduled regional flights Sunday while adding capacity for disrupted travelers.

Advice for Canceled Flights

Travel expert Danny Rivers-Mitchell of Black Girls Travel Too urged travelers to multitask during major disruptions—lining up for airport assistance while simultaneously calling airlines, using apps, and reaching out on social media. She stressed acting quickly to improve chances of rebooking as seats disappear fast.

What Travelers Are Owed

An FAA no-fly order is considered outside an airline’s control, meaning carriers are not required to provide compensation or lodging. However, federal rules require airlines to offer refunds for canceled flights if passengers choose not to travel, and penalty-free rebooking if they do.

Managing the Fallout

As families searched for accommodations and new itineraries, frustration mounted over communication gaps. “What’s in their control is how they respond,” McNeil said, emphasizing the importance of timely updates and support for stranded passengers as travel slowly returned to normal.

DiCaprio Misses Palm Springs Film Awards

Leonardo DiCaprio was unable to attend the Palm Springs International Film Awards on Jan. 3 due to travel disruptions caused by airport delays and restricted airspace across California and the Caribbean.

Honored Despite Absence

DiCaprio was set to close the ceremony and receive the Desert Palm Achievement Award for his performance in “One Battle After Another.” Festival officials said they were disappointed he could not attend in person but praised his lasting contributions to cinema.

Video Message to the Crowd

Although absent, DiCaprio appeared via a prerecorded video after being introduced by co-stars Teyana Taylor and Chase Infiniti. He thanked the audience and reflected on the importance of preserving the theatrical moviegoing experience, calling cinema a communal art form.

Other Highlights of the Night

The ceremony featured appearances by several stars, including Timothée Chalamet, who received the Spotlight Actor of the Year Award, and Ethan Hawke, who accepted a Career Achievement Award and spoke about mental health, creativity and protecting what he called “the wild” in art.
