An American tourist killed on Mount Etna was struck by lightning while hiking the active volcano in Sicily. Italian firefighters said the incident occurred Sunday evening, Aug. 16.
The 29-year-old man was visiting from Kansas. Authorities had not released his name as of Monday.
Helicopter Crew Recovers American Tourist on Mount Etna
Rescue personnel found the man near Rocca Capra, an exposed area within the Valle del Bove. He was located at about 1,400 meters, or nearly 4,600 feet, above sea level.
A helicopter crew recovered the tourist from the rugged volcanic landscape. Medical personnel later pronounced him dead.
Officials said lightning struck the man while he was hiking in an open, barren area. Such terrain provides little natural shelter when thunderstorms develop.
Authorities had closed some areas of Mount Etna because of prolonged volcanic activity. However, officials had not confirmed whether the tourist entered one of those restricted areas.
The circumstances surrounding his route remained under review. Officials did not immediately provide information about other hikers who may have been nearby.
Mount Etna Faced Recent Volcanic Activity
The fatal lightning strike followed a period of heightened activity at Mount Etna. Ash from the volcano disrupted operations at Catania’s airport for much of the previous week.
Volcanic ash can create serious risks for aircraft engines. Airport officials sometimes delay or cancel flights when ash clouds move across flight routes.
Italy’s Civil Protection Department lists Mount Etna at a yellow alert level. That designation indicates a state of attention and increased monitoring.

Lightning Presents a Major Mountain Hazard
Officials noted that lightning has caused more deaths on Mount Etna in recent decades than volcanic activity. The last deaths directly connected to an eruption occurred in 1987.
High elevations and open landscapes can leave hikers exposed during sudden thunderstorms. Conditions on Mount Etna may also shift rapidly, even when weather appears stable at lower elevations.
The barren ground around Rocca Capra sits within the Valle del Bove, a large depression covered by lava from past eruptions. The area contains steep slopes, uneven volcanic rock and limited shelter.
Visitors should monitor local weather forecasts and official access restrictions before beginning an excursion. Marked trails and authorized guides can also provide important safety support.
Hikers should leave exposed ridges, summits and open areas when thunder becomes audible. Local closures must remain in effect even when volcanic activity appears distant or conditions seem calm.
The death serves as a reminder that Mount Etna presents both volcanic and mountain-related dangers. Travelers visiting the area should follow official guidance and avoid closed routes.
