Iran Attack on U.S. Forces in Jordan Raises Tensions After U.S.-Saudi Strikes in Iraq

An Iran attack on U.S. forces in Jordan has intensified concerns over a wider Middle East conflict. The latest escalation came as the United States and Saudi Arabia carried out strikes in Iraq against Iran-aligned militia sites.

Iran Attack on U.S. Forces in Jordan

U.S. Central Command said two American service members were killed in Jordan on July 17. A third service member was reported missing after Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks.

CENTCOM said U.S. and partner forces were defending against the attack at the time. Four American service members were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan. They were later discharged, according to the command.

Iranian state media later reported missile launches aimed at U.S. airbases in Jordan. Jordan’s military said it intercepted and destroyed five Iranian missiles. No immediate casualties or damage were reported in that later attack.

The attacks have added pressure to an already unstable region. U.S. forces remain deployed across the Middle East, including in Jordan, Iraq, Syria, and the Gulf.

U.S. and Saudi Forces Strike Iraq Sites

On July 28, U.S. Central Command said American and Saudi forces conducted precision strikes in Iraq. The strikes targeted logistics and weapons sites used by Iran-aligned armed groups.

CENTCOM said the strikes followed more than 30 drone attacks in 72 hours. The command said those attacks targeted U.S. forces and Saudi energy infrastructure.

The U.S. military said the recent drone attacks against American forces were not successful. CENTCOM also warned Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and allied groups to stop further attacks.

Reports said the strikes hit sites in eastern Iraq. Iraqi militia officials said at least 20 fighters and six Iranian advisers were killed. The Popular Mobilization Forces also reported wounded members.

Iraq Condemns the Strikes

Iraq’s government condemned the U.S.-Saudi strikes. Iraqi officials called the attacks a violation of the country’s sovereignty.

The Popular Mobilization Forces are a coalition of mostly Shiite armed groups. Many have ties to Iran. The Iraqi government also recognizes the coalition as part of its security structure.
