A West Canino Road shooting in north Harris County left a 17-year-old girl and her 29-year-old brother dead Sunday morning after a confrontation involving the teen’s ex-boyfriend, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the teen’s toddler was nearby but was not hurt.
The shooting happened around 10:50 a.m. on West Canino Road near Airline Drive. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified the suspect as 19-year-old Angel Javier Rodriguez.
West Canino Road Shooting Started Outside Home
Investigators said the 17-year-old girl had stepped outside her trailer with a toddler. She was handing the child to a family member when Rodriguez allegedly approached with a gun.
Authorities said Rodriguez was the teen’s ex-boyfriend. Officials also said he was the child’s father.
The teen’s 29-year-old brother then came outside and tried to de-escalate the situation, according to investigators. However, Rodriguez allegedly opened fire and shot both siblings.
Deputies said the victims were each shot multiple times. Rodriguez then left the scene in a vehicle.
Deputies Tried to Save Victims
Harris County deputies arrived within minutes of the shooting. They began providing first aid until paramedics arrived.
Despite those efforts, both victims died at the scene. Officials have not released their names.
Several people were nearby when the shooting happened. Investigators said family members, friends and other trailer park residents were in the area.
No one else was injured. However, officials said at least one other family member was shot at during the incident.
Toddler Was Not Hurt
The toddler who was outside with the teen was not physically injured. Still, authorities said the child lost both parents because of the shooting and arrest.
“Unfortunately for that child, today they just lost both their parents. One’s deceased and one’s going to be in prison for the rest of their life,” Sgt. Michael Ritchie said.
The statement underscored the impact of the shooting on the child and the victims’ family. It also highlighted the lasting consequences of domestic violence.
Community members in the area were left shaken by the violence. The shooting happened in a residential area where several people were close enough to witness or hear the gunfire.
Suspect Arrested on Will Clayton Road
A short time after the shooting, officers with the Humble Police Department and deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office found Rodriguez’s vehicle.
Authorities located him on Will Clayton Road near Wilson Road. He was taken into custody without incident.
Rodriguez has since been charged with capital murder in connection with the double homicide, Gonzalez said. He has been booked into the Harris County Jail.
As the case moves through the courts, Rodriguez is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
