American Airlines updates portable charger rules starting May 1

0

Travelers flying with American Airlines should be aware of new restrictions on portable chargers aimed at improving in-flight safety.

What’s changing

Beginning May 1, passengers must keep portable chargers visible and within reach while in use. The devices can no longer be stored in overhead bins during operation, allowing flight crews to respond more quickly if an issue arises.

New limits on chargers

Under the updated policy:

  • Passengers may bring up to two portable chargers
  • Each charger must be 100 watt-hours or less
  • Chargers cannot be stored in overhead bins
  • Chargers cannot be recharged during the flight

These devices rely on lithium-ion batteries, which can pose fire risks if damaged or overheated.

Why the change?

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, there were 97 lithium battery incidents on aircraft in 2025, prompting airlines to tighten safety measures.

Industry-wide trend

Other major carriers are implementing similar policies:

  • Southwest Airlines limits passengers to one portable charger
  • United Airlines does not allow power banks in checked luggage
  • Delta Air Lines will also limit passengers to two chargers under 100 watt-hours each starting May 1

Bottom line

Passengers should keep portable chargers accessible and within approved limits to avoid issues at the airport or during the flight.
